The 1975 German Grand Prix took place on August 3rd at the Nürburgring and was the eleventh race of the 1975 automobile world championship .
Reports
background
Because of the numerous accidents that had occurred in the last lap of the British Grand Prix due to the sudden onset of rain, the repair effort for some teams in the two weeks before the German GP was very high. For this reason, the Surtees team had to refrain from participating and allowed its regular driver John Watson to replace Jacky Ickx at Lotus .
Frank Williams reported a second car next to the one for regular driver Jacques Laffite and occupied it with Ian Ashley .
The Warsteiner Brewery enabled the Austrian Harald Ertl, who competed with a German driver's license, to make his Grand Prix debut by sponsoring the second works Hesketh , which the works team had loaned to the private Harry Stiller Racing Team earlier in the season.
Instead of the twice hapless Hiroshi Fushida , the debutant Tony Trimmer tried to qualify for a Grand Prix with the inferior Maki F101 .
training
Ian Ashley had a serious accident during training in the Pflanzgarten section and was unable to take part in the race due to the injuries he suffered.
With a lap time of 6: 58.6 min. Niki Lauda secured pole position for the sixth time this season. This is the fastest lap that has ever been driven on the 22.835-kilometer Nordschleife , which, in its layout at the time, existed until 1982. However, since this is a training time that did not come about under racing conditions, it is not valid as an official lap record.
Carlos Pace qualified for second place , who reached the seven-minute mark exactly, but could not undercut it. The two Tyrrell factory drivers Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler formed the second row ahead of Clay Regazzoni in the second Ferrari 312T and Jochen Mass in the McLaren M23 . His teammate, the reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi , qualified for eighth place behind March driver Hans-Joachim Stuck . James Hunt and Carlos Reutemann completed the top ten.
run
From the start, Lauda took the lead in front of Pace and Depailler, while Scheckter fell back to the end of the field after a very bad start. During the first lap, Jochen Mass was the victim of a puncture and had a serious accident, but escaped unharmed. Mark Donohue had a similar problem but made his way back to the pits. This was the start of a series of punctures caused by the extreme heat of summer during the race. Due to a damaged clutch, the race was over for Ronnie Peterson after just one lap.
Lauda started the second lap as the leader in front of Depailler, Pace, Reutemann and Regazzoni. During this round, Emerson Fittipaldi dropped out due to a tire damage which eventually caused a defect in the suspension. In the fifth lap, this also happened to pace. Scheckter, who had worked his way up a few positions from the back of the field, had a serious accident on the seventh lap without suffering any injuries.
After nine laps, only around half of those who had started were still in the race. Depailler had fallen far behind due to a repair stop due to a suspension damage. This resulted in a Ferrari double lead for a short time , which, however, ended on the same lap due to an engine failure in Regazzoni's car. Shortly afterwards, Lauda was also the victim of a puncture. Due to the necessary pit stop, he dropped to fifth place, while Carlos Reutemann led the race ahead of James Hunt and Tom Pryce . Hunt dropped out after the tenth lap and Pryce was unable to drive at the limit as fuel spilled into his cockpit through a leak in the tank.
Ultimately, Reutemann celebrated his first victory of the current season and Jacques Laffite secured one of the best results in team history for the underfunded team Frank Williams Racing Cars by finishing second. Lauda extended his lead in the world championship standings in third place against his main competitor Fittipaldi, who after his failure had to temporarily leave second place in this table to the victorious Reutemann.
Clay Regazzoni set the fastest lap of the race in 7: 06.4 minutes. Since this time came about under racing conditions, it is considered the official lap record of the 22.835-kilometer track layout. The record has not been broken since 1982 due to the changed routing in the area of the former start-and-finish loop and is therefore still in place today.
