Reports
background
Four races before the end of the season, Jim Clark had the chance to become world champion early with a win. Clark had won all five previous races of the season except Monaco. He skipped the Monaco Grand Prix and instead took part in the Indianapolis 500 , which he also won. In the drivers' championship, Clark was clearly ahead of the two BRM drivers Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart , who only had theoretical chances of winning the world championship. Lotus also only needed one more victory to win the designer title .
Lotus entered three cars for the Grand Prix for the first time this season. In addition to the regular drivers Clark and Mike Spence , Gerhard Mitter received a car; for him it was the only race of the season. Mitter already drove a Lotus at the 1964 German Grand Prix . Also Brabham reported three vehicles, team owner Jack Brabham returned to a race break and drove next to his teammate Denny Hulme and Dan Gurney . Honda decided not to start and instead intensively prepared for the Italian Grand Prix .
For the teams with customer vehicles, the driver pairings also changed. DW Racing Enterprises drove with Bob Anderson and Paul Hawkins . Anderson then ended the season, for Hawkins it was the last race in the automobile world championship . Hawkins then continued his career in the World Sports Car Championship . At Reg Parnell Racing Innes Ireland paused for a race, for him Chris Amon contested his last race of the season. Amon last drove a Lotus in the World Automobile Championship and in 1966 he only contested one race for Cooper . The Scuderia Centro Sud reported two BRM P57s for masts Gregory and Roberto Businello . Gregory returned after a racing break, Businello after four years. Ian Raby Racing with Ian Raby was registered for a Grand Prix for the last time, Raby continued his career in Formula 2 in 1966 .
With Joakim Bonnier , Hill and John Surtees three former winners took part in the race, Surtees won the Grand Prix in 1963 and 1964. In the constructors' category, Ferrari won eight times, Lotus and BRM once each.
training
Originally four training sessions were planned, but the organizers reduced the number to three. The first training session took place on Friday morning and lasted two hours. Lotus set slow lap times at the beginning, but the competition quickly undercut the pole time of the previous year. Stewart was the fastest driver ahead of Surtees, Hill and Gurney. Stewart was nine seconds faster than the fastest lap of the previous year's event. Raby and Attwood got stuck on the track with technical problems and it took until the end of practice before the cars were brought back into the pit lane.
The second training session started on Friday afternoon. Clark improved the fastest time by another eight seconds. Stewart stopped with electronics damaged and missed the entire training session. Hill, Surtees and Gurney also drove times under 8:30 minutes and overtook Stewart in the ranking, but remained well behind Clark. Anderson had an accident after a spin, collided with some trees and damaged his Brabham. He survived the accident unharmed and was driven back into the pit lane by Joseph Siffert .
Another two-hour training session took place on Saturday; only a few drivers were able to improve their respective best times. Stewart lapped the track in 8: 26.1 minutes and was the new second; the other positions in the front field remained unchanged. Clark secured his fourth pole position of the season with a lead of more than three seconds. Stewart started from second in front of his team-mate Hill. Surtees was fourth ahead of Gurney and Spence, followed by Lorenzo Bandini and Jochen Rindt . As the best driver with a customer vehicle, Joakim Bonnier qualified in ninth place, the top ten was completed by Bruce McLaren . Hulme and Brabham started in the back field. 19 vehicles were approved for the race, so that two drivers, Businello and Raby, did not qualify for the race.
run
Before the start of the race it was raining lightly for a few minutes, but the track only got slightly wet and was completely dry at the start. Anderson decided not to start the race because his Brabham was too badly damaged by the training accident. Clark took the lead and built a bigger lead over the competition during the first lap. He broke the existing lap record and was three seconds faster than the competition. Surtees lost speed due to a problem when changing gears and fell back several places. After one lap he came into the pits, had the gearbox damage repaired and was then able to use the higher gears. Attwood also pitted for a successful engine repair. Hill improved to second place on the first lap, followed by Gurney and Stewart fighting for third place. Bandini and Spence followed a few seconds behind.
On lap eight, Clark set another new course record and improved the existing one by nine seconds. Hill stayed in sight of Clark, behind which there was already a larger gap with Gurney. Stewart went off the track due to a driving mistake and damaged the suspension of his BRM. He pitted but the mechanics could not repair the damage and the race was over for Stewart. Gardner, Amon and Hawkins also retired on the first laps of the race due to various defects. Bandini, McLaren, Spence, Rindt, Siffert, Bonnier, Brabham, Hulme and Mitter formed a larger midfield that fought for fourth place. Hulme was eliminated from this duel on lap five due to fuel loss, McLaren followed him two laps later with a gearbox failure. Then Spence and Attwood on lap eight and Mitter parked their vehicles on lap nine. The cause of failure for Mitter was damage to the drive shaft. Siffert retired with engine failure.
Due to the failure of the competition and after a spin by Bandini, Rindt improved to fourth place ahead of Brabham. Clark set another lap record and was 25 seconds ahead of Hill. Only Surtees drove similar lap times at this time, but retired with a gearbox damage. Only eight vehicles were still in the race. Clark kept the distance to Hill constant at over 20 seconds and won the race by a superior margin. In addition to the fastest lap and the pole position, he had led all the racing laps, thus reaching his third Grand Slam of the season. After Clark, no driver managed to reach a Grand Slam three times in one season. It was the eighth and last Grand Slam of his career, a record that still stands. With the win, Clark secured his second and final drivers' world championship ahead of schedule. August 1st was the earliest point in time at which a world champion was determined ahead of time. Michael Schumacher only broke this record in the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship when he became world champion on July 21st. For Clark it was the fifth win in a row and the sixth of six races of the season in which he had participated. It was his only one at the German Grand Prix. As in the 1963 Automobile World Championship , he achieved the maximum number of points possible due to the deletion of results. No other driver succeeded in doing this later. Lotus became the constructors' world champion with the victory, also with the maximum possible number of points. For Climax as an engine supplier it was the last victory in the automobile world championship.
In the final laps, Gurney came within five seconds of Hill, who maintained his lead and crossed the finish line in second place. Gurney finished third for the second year in a row. Rindt finished fourth, three minutes behind Clark, and received the first points of his career in the automobile world championship. Rindt became the first Austrian driver to succeed. The other points went to Brabham and Bandini. Bonnier was ranked seventh, Gregory eighth. In the drivers' championship, the first four positions remained unchanged, Hill extended his lead over team-mate Stewart to five points. In the constructors' championship, the positions did not change either, BRM was 18 points ahead of Ferrari in second.
After the race, Clark said in an interview that 1965 was the best year of his career and that he will remember it as his "Magic Year" as he won both the Indianapolis 500 and the World Championship.
