Robert McGregor Innes Ireland (born June 12, 1930 in Kirkcudbright , Scotland , † October 23, 1993 in Reading , Berkshire ) was a British racing driver . Between 1959 and 1966 he competed in a total of 50 Formula 1 Grand Prix races , one of which he won.

Career

Ireland was the son of a Scottish veterinarian. Born in Yorkshire, he moved back to Scotland with his family when he was young . He completed his engineering training at Rolls-Royce , for which he worked first in Glasgow and later in London . In the early 1950s he served in the King's Own Scottish Borderers Regiment on the Suez Canal .

Innes Ireland and a few marshals push the Lotus 25 back onto the track after training for the 1965 Dutch Grand Prix

He made his Formula 1 debut at the Dutch Grand Prix in the 1959 season with the Lotus team. From 1959 to 1962 Ireland competed in 28 Grand Prix for Lotus. After he had a serious accident during training in Monte Carlo and had to take a break for several weeks, he won his first Grand Prix victory for Lotus at the US Grand Prix in 1961 , which was also the only one in his career.

From 1963 to 1964 he drove 14 races for the British Racing Partnership (BRP) team with moderate success . His best placings were two fourth places in the 1963 Dutch Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix .

In the 1965 season he started seven races for the Reg Parnell Racing Team with a Lotus BRM, but only crossed the finish line in three races. He completed his last two Formula 1 World Championship races with a BRM in 1966 for the Bernard White team . However, both races ended prematurely with technical defects.

Innes Ireland achieved a total of 47 World Championship points in 50 Grand Prix races. He won a Grand Prix and once set the fastest race lap (at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1960 ).

His last official race was the Daytona 500 in 1967. He later worked as a journalist for American Road & Track magazine , wrote his autobiography , All Arms and Elbows, and was President of the British Racing Drivers' Club .
