Reports

background

Fourth win in a row at Jim Clark's British Grand Prix

The organization of the British Grand Prix has been transferred from the Royal Automobile Club to the British Racing Drivers' Club . In the following years, the BRDC took over the permanent staging of the race. The Grand Prix of Great Britain was held in Silverstone every year after it had taken place in Brands Hatch the previous year .

The Scuderia Ferrari reported a Ferrari in 1512 for John Surtees and Ferrari 158 for Lorenzo Bandini . Another Ferrari 158 served as a replacement car for Surtees, but he did not use it. With this, the two drivers exchanged the cars they had previously driven at every race. The Lotus team reported two Lotus 33s that were also used. An old Lotus 25 , with which Jim Clark had won the previous race, was intended as a replacement vehicle for both Clark and Mike Spence . Brabham reported three vehicles for the first time. In addition to Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney , Denis Hulme again received a cockpit. In contrast to his teammates' Brabham BT11 , however, he drove an older Brabham BT7 . Honda withdrew the report from Ronnie Bucknum before the race and started with only one vehicle for Richie Ginther .

In the teams with customer vehicles, Richard Attwood returned to the Automobile World Championship after his injury break and replaced Chris Amon . Innes Ireland continued to be the second driver . Instead, Amon was registered for the only time in his career for Ian Raby Racing , who fielded two Brabham BT3s . Ian Raby drove his last race in the automobile world championship on the second vehicle . He was registered again for the German Grand Prix in 1965 , but did not qualify. After a break from racing, John Willment Automobiles was back. The team started a Brabham BT11 for Frank Gardner . Masten Gregory drove for Scuderia Centro Sud . After one race, however, the next break for Scuderia Centro Sud followed. Bob Gerard Racing ran a Cooper T60 with a Climax engine for John Rhodes and a Cooper T73 with a Ford engine for Alan Rollinson . Brian Gubby was privately registered with a Lotus 24 . For Gubby and Rollinson it was the only entry in the automobile world championship, for Rhodes the only Grand Prix.

With Jack Brabham and Clark two former winners took part in the race, Clark won the race in the previous three years. Ferrari had previously been successful seven times with the designers, Lotus three times and Cooper twice. In the drivers' standings, Clark was clearly ahead of Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart . In the constructors' championship, Lotus was just first ahead of BRM , while Ferrari was third by a large margin.

training

The first two training sessions took place on Thursday. Since the teams expected rain on Friday, fast lap times were set right from the start. Surtees was faster with his Ferrari 1512 than Bandini with the Ferrari 158 and set the first best time. A short time later, Hill, Stewart and Clark also improved. In the second training session, Hill and Clark dueled each other for the fastest lap time and undercut each other several times. Surtees was a narrow margin in third place. Towards the end of practice Hill prevailed against Clark and achieved the fastest lap time of the day.

Another training session took place on Friday; it lasted 2.5 hours. The expected rain did not materialize, so most of the drivers continued to improve their times. With a time of 1: 30.8 minutes, Clark set a new personal best and was two tenths of a second faster than Hill. For Clark it was the second pole position in a row and the third overall of the season. Ginther improved to third, but was half a second slower than Clark. Both Stewart and Surtees drove the same lap times as Ginther and qualified in fourth and fifth. Spence finished sixth ahead of the Brabham from Gurney and Brabham. The first ten were completed by Bandini and Hulme. Both Cooper of the works team qualified in the midfield in eleventh and twelfth positions, but were still ahead of the drivers with customer vehicles, of which Gardner was the fastest.

The condition of the race management for the race qualification was that a driver could be a maximum of five seconds slower than the third placed. This time was 1: 36.3. Rhodes, Rollinson and Gubby missed them and were therefore not qualified for the race. But since Raby started with Amon's vehicle and Brabham made his car available to Gurney, Rhodes received a start permit despite non-qualification and poorer training time than Rollinson.

run

Gurney had an engine failure on the starting grid. Brabham then decided not to start and gave Gurney both his car and his starting place. This was the first race in Brabham's career that he qualified but did not start. Clark won the starting duel and was briefly ahead of Ginther, who overtook Clark before the first corner. During the first lap of the race, Clark countered and took the lead. Ginther fell behind Surtees and Hill in the second round. Hill was in second place and came up to Clark, behind which there was a gap to Surtees, who was fighting Ginther for third place, in the following laps. Stewart, Spence, McLaren and Hulme formed a group behind them, which competed for the remaining points.

Bandini retired on lap two with engine failure. Bonnier was at the pits to have a broken pipe on his vehicle repaired. Gregory needed a pit stop to repair the transmission. In the lead, Clark increased his lead over Hill, behind which the two chasing groups merged into a larger one after Surtees and Ginther had minor problems. Ginther dropped further positions and later retired. Again Honda did not reach the goal due to a technical defect. On lap 24, Spence overtook Stewart in the battle for fourth place, who was having trouble handling his car. On the same lap, Rindt spun off the track and thereby lost two positions. Spence caught up with third-placed Surtees in the following laps and overtook him, Stewart fell a little behind the two drivers.

Hulme retired on lap 29, followed by Anderson four laps later. Rhodes and Ireland also parked their cars due to technical defects later in the race. McLaren stopped at the pits because his gearbox was no longer working properly and he was having trouble changing gears. The problem could not be resolved and McLaren continued the race at the bottom of the field. His team-mate Rindt had an engine failure on lap 62, but was still classified in 14th place. Cooper remained without points in this race.

Ten laps before the end of the race, Clark was half a lap ahead of Hill, but the fuel pump was no longer working properly. Initially, this defect had little effect on Clark's lap times, but it was clearly audible. BRM signaled to Hill that Clark was having problems with his Lotus, whereupon Hill increased his pace and continuously reduced the gap to the leader. Clark's Lotus also began to lose oil and Clark was forced to stop accelerating in the corners. He drove slowly and carefully until the end of the race so as not to risk engine damage, which enabled Hill to catch up quickly. At the start of the last lap of the race, the leader was already in sight of Hill, but he only got within three seconds before Clark crossed the finish line. Hill drove the fastest race lap in this lap, which was also a new course record.

Clark won the British Grand Prix for the fourth time in a row. To date, he is the only driver who has managed to do this. It was his third win in a row that season and the fourth of four races in which he had participated. Surtees finished third and scored the last podium finish for Ferrari of the season. The other points went to Spence, Stewart and Gurney. Bonnier finished seventh ahead of Gardner, Siffert and McLaren. In the drivers' championship, Clark extended his lead over Hill to 13 points, with Stewart remaining in third place. In the constructors' championship, Lotus had five points ahead of BRM and 16 on Ferrari after the race.
