report

backgrounds

After the Austrian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with eleven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 57 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 103 points ahead of Ferrari and with 127 points ahead of Red Bull .

At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange), P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to last year, artificial turf was laid on the outside in the corners of Copse , Stowe and Club to prevent the pilots from leaving the track.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 30 meters after Aintree Corner and the measuring point was 25 meters before Village Corner . The second DRS zone was on Hangar Straight , 55 meters after the chapel , the measuring point was at the entrance of the Maggotts .

The following drivers entered the race with penalty points: Daniil Kwjat (seven), Max Verstappen (six), Kimi Räikkönen (five), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Rio Haryanto , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Nasr , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Fernando Alonso , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Jolyon Palmer and Rosberg (two each).

With Hamilton (three times), Alonso (twice), Räikkönen, Vettel and Rosberg (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race commissioners were Dennis Carter (GBR), Nigel Mansell (GBR), Tim Mayer (USA) and Nish Shetty (SIN).

Honda provided McLaren with an improved internal combustion engine for this race and invested two of the tokens still available for the change. For the first time, Haas used the enhanced version of the Ferrari 059/5 , which the works team had been using since the Canadian Grand Prix . Also Sauber drove the first time with the Ferrari engine update.

training

In the first free practice session, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 31.654 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Hülkenberg. In the morning, Ferrari tested an improved version of the Halo system on Vettel's vehicle , which protects the pilot's head from debris or torn off wheels.

In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 31.660 minutes ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen. Rosberg had to skip this training because of a water leak in his car.

Hamilton also set the fastest time in the third free practice session, this time in 1: 30.904 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo. Training had to be interrupted due to an accident involving Ericsson. He had to be hospitalized after the accident. Vettel suffered a gearbox failure shortly before the end of the training session.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. After his accident in the third free practice session, Ericsson did not take part in qualifying and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides him, Nasr, the Manor pilots, Palmer and Jenson Button , whose rear wing had come off on the timed lap, were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Magnussen, Kwjat, the Haas pilots, Felipe Massa and Pérez were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 29.287 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Verstappen. It was Hamilton's 55th pole position, including the sixth of the season. The time of his first timed lap was canceled because he left the track, the same thing happened to Hülkenberg, who fell from eighth to ninth place, and Alonso, who fell from ninth to tenth place.

Ericsson and Vettel received starting place penalties of five places because the gearbox of their cars had been changed prematurely. Ericsson was allowed to take part in the race because he was fast enough in free practice. However, he had to start from the pit lane because the monocoque of his Sauber was changed. The starting place penalty of five places for an early gear change was therefore no longer applicable.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Verstappen. Rosberg subsequently received a ten-second time penalty because his team had sent him unauthorized radio messages when he had a transmission problem shortly before the end. As a result, Rosberg fell behind Verstappen. It was the 47th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Pérez, Hülkenberg, Sainz, Vettel and Kwjat occupied the remaining points.

In the overall standings, Hamilton reduced the gap to Rosberg to one point, and Raikkonen was now third. When it came to constructors, Mercedes increased its lead over Ferrari, Red Bull was only six points behind Ferrari.
