report

backgrounds

At the Australian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The two DRS zones were in the same places as in the previous year, the first zone began on the start-finish straight exactly 762 meters before the first corner, the Jones . After the Brabham began the second zone, which was 510 meters long. There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, where the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; he was eight feet from the Stewart . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

There were only minor changes to the route compared to the previous year. A 25-meter-long section of the straight in front of Whiteford was re-paved due to bumps, and the curbs at the exit of the last bend were lengthened by four meters. At the exit of turn 5 , the wall and tire wall have been realigned.

The two Manor drivers Rio Haryanto and Pascal Wehrlein as well as Jolyon Palmer ( Renault ) and the Haas F1 Team made their Formula 1 debut at this Grand Prix. With the Renault Sport F1 Team , Renault returned to Formula 1 after seven years as a works team. World Championship back. The two Haas drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez as well as Renault driver Kevin Magnussen started for their new team for the first time.

Max Verstappen (eight), Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Sebastian Vettel (three each), Fernando Alonso , Valtteri Bottas , Jenson Button , Grosjean, Lewis Hamilton , Daniil Kwjat , Felipe Nasr and Sergio Pérez (each two) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Button (three times), Raikkonen, Hamilton (twice each), Alonso, Vettel and Nico Rosberg (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Steve Chopping (AUS), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Gerd Ennser (DEU) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 29.725 minutes ahead of Kwjat and Daniel Ricciardo . The training began in the rain, after which the track dried out so that the drivers drove with dry tires. A few minutes before the end it started raining again. Since dry conditions were predicted for qualifying and the race, many drivers only did a few laps, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Vettel did not drive a timed lap at all. Several drivers spun or strayed from the track, but without damaging the vehicles.

In the second free practice session, Hamilton was also fastest with a lap time of 1: 38.841 minutes ahead of Hülkenberg and Raikkonen. Again, the training took place in the wet, but in contrast to the first free practice, the track never dried out so much that the drivers used dry tires. Ericsson, Nasr and Verstappen therefore decided not to take part in training, and Bottas, Magnussen, Felipe Massa and Palmer also did not drive a single timed lap. Vettel spoke of "wasted time" after training. Only the Manor pilots Haryanto and Wehrlein covered more than 20 laps. After a driving mistake, Rosberg slipped into the barrier and damaged the front wing and nose of his car. At first he tried to drive back into the pits on his own, but then parked the vehicle at the edge of the track at the direction of his team.

In the third free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 25.624 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Haryanto collided with the approaching Grosjean while exiting his box. Haryanto received a starting place penalty of three places and two penalty points.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1) the drivers had 16 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The first pilot was eliminated after seven minutes, then another one every 90 seconds. Hamilton was fastest. The Manor and Haas drivers, Kwjat and both Sauber drivers were eliminated. Gutiérrez drove a lap time that would have placed him in the top five, but the 90 seconds expired before that.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The eight fastest drivers qualified for the third part of qualifying. The first pilot was eliminated after six minutes, then another one every 90 seconds. Hamilton was again fastest. The Renault and McLaren drivers, Bottas and the Force India drivers were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted 14 minutes, during which the first eight starting positions were awarded. The first driver retired after five minutes, and another one every 90 seconds. In the last minutes of the third section, however, the track remained empty because all the drivers had used up the tire sets available to them. Hamilton drove the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. It was Hamilton's fiftieth pole position, including the fifth at the Australian Grand Prix.

After qualifying, Bottas was moved five grid positions back because the gearbox of his Williams was changed.

After the qualifying format turned out to be unsuitable in the opinion of drivers, team bosses, media representatives and fans, the team managers decided unanimously before the start of the race to recommend that the Formula 1 Commission use the previous season's qualifying format again from the Bahrain Grand Prix .

run

At the end of the introductory lap, Kwjat stopped on the start-finish straight, the start was canceled and a second introductory lap was driven. This shortened the race distance by one lap to 57 laps. Kwjat's car was pushed into the pit lane, but Red Bull was unable to get the car back onto the track.

Vettel started the best and took the lead. In the first corner there was contact between Hamilton and Rosberg, Hamilton had to take off the gas and fell back to sixth place behind Raikkonen, Verstappen and Massa. Raikkonen also passed Rosberg and was in second place. Magnussen suffered a puncture and had to pit at the end of the first lap to change tires. At the end of the first lap, Vettel was leading ahead of Raikkonen, Rosberg, Verstappen, Massa, Hamilton, Sainz, Hülkenberg, Ricciardo and Alonso.

On the fourth lap, Hamilton passed Massa and was thus in fifth place. Gutiérrez complained to the pit radio about engine problems, he lost around twenty seconds and fell back to penultimate place, behind him was only the already lapped Magnussen.

Sainz was the first driver to go into the pits to change tires, Ricciardo passed Hülkenberg and Massa in quick succession. Rosberg pitted on lap 12 and switched to the middle of the three tire compounds. Vettel and Verstappen pitted a lap later, Vettel again switched to the softest mixture and came back onto the track just before Rosberg. Meanwhile, Raikkonen was ahead of Hamilton, but both drove around four seconds per lap slower than Vettel and Rosberg. Vettel overtook Hamilton one lap later, and Rosberg attacked him too. Hamilton pitted at the end of the lap and switched to the hardest tire compound.

On lap 17, when Alonso attacked Gutiérrez, the two vehicles came into contact, Alonso's McLaren hit the lane and rolled over in the gravel. The car was almost completely destroyed, Gutiérrez also turned into the gravel and retired. To rescue the two vehicles, the safety car was first sent out on the track, but the race was interrupted two laps later with the red flag. Alonso managed to get out of his vehicle on his own. During the accident he was subjected to forces of 47 g , fractured his ribs and suffered a pneumothorax as a result . He dropped out for the next race.

During the break, Rosberg switched to the hardest tire compound, the Ferrari drivers stayed on the softest compound. Haryanto dropped out because of a technical problem. At the restart, the positions remained unchanged, Vettel was leading in front of Rosberg, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Sainz, Hamilton, Massa, Grosjean and Bottas.

Two laps later, Raikkonen drove to the pits and parked his Ferrari, when there was a lot of smoke and flames from the airbox. Ericsson received a drive-through penalty because his mechanics were still working on the vehicle after the 15-second signal before the restart.

Vettel managed at the top to break away from Rosberg. Hamilton put Sainz under pressure, but couldn't get past until Sainz and, shortly afterwards, Verstappen pitted to change tires. At Verstappen's pit stop, the new tires were not yet ready, so that Verstappen fell behind Sainz. After a few laps, Vettel's tires began to wear out so that Rosberg caught up again. Hamilton, who now had a clear run, caught up with Vettel by more than a second per lap.

On lap 35, Vettel pitted and switched to the medium tire compound. During the pit stop , the mechanics had problems with the left front wheel, so the pit stop took about two seconds longer than usual. Vettel fell back to fourth place behind Rosberg, Ricciardo and Hamilton. Grosjean was meanwhile in front of Hulkenberg and Bottas, who did not succeed in setting off an attack. Ericsson suffered a technical problem and drove slowly back to the pits, where he parked the vehicle.

Hamilton caught up with Ricciardo and passed on lap 42, one lap later Ricciardo switched to the softest tire compound and fell behind Vettel and Massa. Sainz and Verstappen passed Palmer in quick succession and were now both back in the points. Ricciardo overtook Massa on lap 46, and then drove the fastest lap of the race several times in a row.

Rosberg drove safely at the top, Vettel shortened the gap on Hamilton and put him under pressure. In the battle for ninth place, Verstappen collided with Sainz and spun, but both drove on. Vettel braked himself in the 55th lap and had to drive through the run-off zone, he lost several seconds.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the fourth win in a row for Rosberg across all seasons. The remaining points were placed by Ricciardo, Massa, Grosjean, Hülkenberg, Bottas, Sainz and Verstappen. Grosjean had only changed his tires during the break in the race and had finished the race without a pit stop and thus scored the first points in the Haas team's debut race, a completely new team that Toyota had last achieved at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix .

In the drivers 'standings the order corresponded to the race results, in the constructors' standings Mercedes was ahead of Ferrari and Williams.

After the race, fans could vote on the official Formula 1 website for the first time on the best driving performance of the race. The award known as the Driver of the Day Award went to Romain Grosjean.
