Compared to the previous year, only minor changes were made to the racetrack. In order to remove the bumps, the stretch between turn ten and turn twelve was partially re-paved. In addition, a new, double curb was installed at the exit of turn 19 .

There were again two DRS zones, which remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the back straight and begins 320 meters after turn eleven , the measuring point was 150 meters after turn ten . The second DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 80 meters after the last bend. The measuring point was 65 meters after curve 18 .

Felipe Nasr , Rosberg (six each), Esteban Gutiérrez , Daniil Kwjat (five each), Valtteri Bottas , Sebastian Vettel , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen , Max Verstappen (three each), Fernando Alonso , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon and Jolyon Palmer (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (four times) and Vettel (once) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Mark Blundell (GBR), Dennis Dean (USA) and Paul Gutjahr (CHE).

At this Grand Prix, Williams used the further developed Mercedes drive unit for the first time, which the works team had been using since the Belgian Grand Prix .
