background
The winter of 1989/90 was marked by disputes between the FIA and McLaren over Ayrton Senna's disqualification after the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix and Senna's claim that this was imposed by FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre with the aim of his compatriot Alain Cheers to make world champions. Senna was then given an additional fine and also had to surrender his super license for half a year. Until shortly before the start of the 1990 season, it was unclear whether he would ever return to Formula 1.
The two German teams Zakspeed and Rial Racing decided against participating in the Formula 1 World Championship again. At AGS , Osella , Brabham , Coloni , Arrows and Onyx there were profound changes in the team structure, some of which were accompanied by a change of ownership.
The most striking change in the field of drivers was the change from world champion Alain Prost to Ferrari , which was announced last year , which means that the team will start the season with numbers 1 and 2, to the chagrin of McLaren team boss Ron Dennis, instead of the starting numbers 27 and 28 that have been used for years could. In return, McLaren took over Gerhard Berger as a new team-mate from Vice World Champion Ayrton Senna, who gave in shortly before the start of the season, publicly apologized for his remarks and thus got his license back.
Williams retained the driver pairing Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese and hired Adrian Newey as a new co-designer alongside Patrick Head . Alessandro Nannini's new teammate at Benetton was Nelson Piquet , who received a performance-related contract from team boss Flavio Briatore , which guaranteed him a million dollars for every win in addition to a fixed base salary.
Team Arrows , nicknamed Footwork , hired the two Italians Michele Alboreto and Alex Caffi as new regular drivers. Since the latter was unable to start the season due to injuries sustained in a bicycle accident, Bernd Schneider stepped in for him.
In addition to Larrousse with drivers Éric Bernard and Aguri Suzuki , Lotus from then on also used a Lamborghini engine. The two British Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly were signed as successors for Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima . Nakajima became Jean Alesi's teammate at Tyrrell . Ligier competed with Nicola Larini and Philippe Alliot . The Brabham team signed Gregor Foitek and Stefano Modena and, like EuroBrun , used Judd engines with Roberto Moreno and the newcomer Claudio Langes as well as the Leyton House renamed March team, which kept the driver pairing Maurício Gugelmin and Ivan Capelli .
In BMS Scuderia Italia was Andrea de Cesaris retained as a regular driver. He should be accompanied by Emanuele Pirro . However, due to illness, he could not start the season in Phoenix, so that his compatriot Gianni Morbidelli got the chance to make his Formula 1 debut. Another newcomer was Gary Brabham , a son of the former world champion Jack Brabham , who competed for the newly founded Life team, which competed with its own engine. The Coloni team was sold to its new engine supplier Subaru . Bertrand Gachot was hired as a driver.
Onyx, Minardi and AGS each started the new year with the driver pairings with whom they had finished the 1989 season . Some teams started the season with modified vehicles from the previous year.
training
Although the entry list was slightly smaller compared to the 1989 season, a pre-qualification still had to take place in order to reduce the number of participants in the two regular qualification rounds to 30. The teams Osella, Larrousse, EuroBrun, AGS, Life and Coloni had to go through the pre-selection that took place on Friday morning.
Philippe Alliot was excluded from the rest of the race weekend due to the use of outside help during practice .
When it was raining, only a few pilots competed for the second qualifying round on Saturday and could not achieve any time improvements due to the wet track conditions. The starting line-up was based on the lap times achieved on Friday.
Behind Gerhard Berger, who took pole position, Pierluigi Martini and Andrea de Cesaris, two drivers from teams equipped with Pirelli tires, qualified for front starting positions. Jean Alesi followed ahead of Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost.
run
Alesi took the lead ahead of Berger, de Cesaris and Senna. The latter fought his way up to second place by the ninth lap. In the 33rd lap he took the lead for the first time. Alesi countered immediately successfully. On lap 35, however, the Brazilian finally took the lead and won. Thierry Boutsen, who overtook Nelson Piquet on lap 28, was third behind Alesi. Behind Piquet, Stefano Modena and Satoru Nakajima finished fifth and sixth.
