Reports
background
Even before the two final overseas races in the USA and Mexico , the Brabham team was established as constructors' world champion, although the Lotus 49 has been recognized as the best car in the field since its introduction at the Dutch Grand Prix . However, the reliability problems of this car prevented a World Championship triumph for the Lotus team and also meant that it was no longer Graham Hill and Jim Clark , who had achieved the most pole positions of the season, but only the two Brabham works drivers who had a chance of winning Drivers world title. These were team founder and defending champion Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme, who was leading in the points table at the time .
The usual field of drivers was once again supplemented by a third works Lotus, which was driven by the Mexican Moisés Solana on the last two Grand Prix weekends of the season . In addition, Matra reported a Formula 2 car in order to gain experience for the team's planned Formula 1 entry in the 1968 season . The vehicle was piloted by Jean-Pierre Beltoise .
training
As has been mandatory for several GP weekends, the two Lotus from Hill and Clark dominated the training and qualified for the front row. They were the only ones to achieve an average speed of over 200 km / h during their best laps. Behind them, Dan Gurney shared the second row with Ferrari driver Chris Amon in his own Eagle T1G . The third row consisted of the two World Cup opponents Brabham and Hulme. Moisés Solana and Jochen Rindt followed on the fourth row.
run
Behind Hill, who initially took the lead, Gurney overtook Clark on the first laps and defended this second place until the end of lap eight. Then he gradually fell back and was eventually eliminated due to suspension damage. As a result, Amon, who had dueled the two factory Brabham at the beginning of the race, moved up to third place.
On the 41st lap, Clark took the lead from Hill, as he was struggling with gearshift problems. On lap 65, Hill fell behind Amon for the same reason. Brabham had meanwhile lost contact with the leading group due to a puncture and a subsequent pit stop. Hill then dueled Amon for second place up to the 85th lap before the New Zealander had to retire due to an engine failure.
In the remaining laps, everything pointed to a sovereign win for Jim Clark, which Hill would add to a Lotus one-two. This finally happened, albeit more closely than expected. With Clark struggling with suspension problems for the last two laps, Hill got within six seconds of him.
Denis Hulme slightly increased his narrow lead in the drivers' championship with third place. However, as Jack Brabham finally reached fifth place and thus also received points, there was no question of a preliminary decision.
