BRM P83
The BRM P83 , also known as the BRM P83 , was a Formula 1 racing car and the racing car used by British Racing Motors in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1966 and 1967 .
The most essential feature of the P83 was the engine. The H-16 unit was a load-bearing part of the vehicle and carried the gearbox and the rear suspension. The P83 was also the only BRM racing car in which the 16-cylinder engine was halfway successful. The 3-liter engine basically consisted of two eight-cylinder blocks with two firing orders. For the high number of cylinders, the engine output remained modest at approx. 420 hp. The engine was the weak point of this otherwise classic monocoque racing car. It was too heavy and made the vehicle rear-heavy, which led to suspension problems in fast corners.
BRM built three chassis, which were named 8301, 8302 and 8303. The car made its debut in the Formula 1 World Championship at the Italian Grand Prix in 1966 . Jackie Stewart drove chassis 8302 and retired after just five laps due to continued massive fuel loss. Graham Hill in the 8303 chassis suffered major engine damage on the first lap.
Countable results could hardly be achieved with the P83. Jackie Stewart achieved the best result at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1967 , where he finished second behind Dan Gurney in the Eagle T1G . However, he was more than a minute behind the American at the finish. Mike Spence , in Belgium in 1967, Canada in 1967 , Italy in 1967 and Mexico in 1967, and Chris Irwin in the French Grand Prix in 1967 each achieved fifth places in world championship races.
Chassis 8301 in 1969 for the Formula 5000 rebuilt and with a Ford - V8 engine equipped. Terry Sanger drove the car in the first year of the British Formula 5000 Championship .
