The 1967 Canadian Grand Prix took place on August 27 and was the eighth race of the 1967 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
The Canadian Grand Prix was first held as a Formula 1 race in 1967. The Italian Grand Prix was between its date at the end of August and the next but one World Cup run in the USA , so the teams had to commute twice between North America and Europe this year.
The top teams Lotus , Brabham and Ferrari competed with the driver line-up that had not changed for several races, with Lotus also providing the local guest starter Eppie Wietzes with a third works car, enabling him to make his Grand Prix debut.
After a few appearances as a team-mate of Dan Gurney in his Eagle team, Bruce McLaren competed with his own team for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix . The reason for this step was the completion of the new McLaren M5A .
Since Pedro Rodríguez had a broken leg in a Formula 2 race at the Autodromo di Pergusa in Enna , he was represented on the Cooper works team by Richard Attwood .
The two US guest starters Tom Jones and Mike Fisher registered for the first time for a Grand Prix in privately used racing cars this weekend. The Canadian Al Pease also contested his first Formula 1 race.
training
As already several times this season, the factory Lotus of Jim Clark and Graham Hill dominated the training. They then shared the front row with Denis Hulme, who was the leader in the world championship . This was followed by Chris Amon and Dan Gurney in series two to Bruce McLaren, Jack Brabham and Jochen Rindt .
run
In the race, Clark initially took the lead in rainy conditions, ahead of Hulme, Hill and Brabham. On the fourth lap, Hulme overtook the leading Clark, while Brabham passed Hill to third place almost at the same time.
McLaren's new in-house design proved to be competitive in the wet conditions. Lying in fifth place, he fell back briefly due to a spin, but fought his way back to third place by the 13th lap. On lap 22 he finally passed Clark and thereby took second place. As the track gradually dried up, McLaren lost its advantages, so that first Clark and a short time later Brabham passed the New Zealander again.
On the 58th lap, Clark was able to regain the lead from Hulme while it was starting to rain again. He defended the top position until lap 68 when he retired due to an engine failure. At around the same time, Hulme was overtaken by Brabham. The team then celebrated a superior one-two victory in front of the lapped Dan Gurney in third, who had to complete four pit stops.
The weekend was unsatisfactory for the four debutants. Tom Jones missed the qualification and Eppie Wietzes was disqualified during the race for seeking outside help. Al Pease had to walk to pick up a battery from the box and hand it over to his broken-down car before he could continue. As a result, he finished so behind that he was not classified. Mike Fisher finished eleventh, nine laps behind the winner, and thus last in the ranking.
