Reports
background
Before the last World Championship round of the season, Denis Hulme was five points ahead of his teammate, defending champion Jack Brabham . Apart from the two, no other driver had the chance of winning the world championship. The Brabham team had been the constructors' world champions since the Italian Grand Prix .
For the first time since the Belgian Grand Prix , Scuderia Ferrari used a second works car alongside that of regular driver Chris Amon . Jonathan Williams contested the first and only Grand Prix of his racing career.
Pedro Rodríguez returned to the Cooper cockpit in time for his home race after his injury-related break . However, he was the only works driver there that weekend, as Jochen Rindt had already left the team and signed a Brabham contract for the following year.
training
The fastest of the training was Jim Clark for the sixth time this season . Thus, for the ninth time in a row, a Lotus 49 took first place on the grid. Chris Amon qualified for second place in a Ferrari 312 . Dan Gurney placed himself in the second row in front of Clark's team-mate Graham Hill . The third row consisted of the two Brabham of the title opponents, with Jack Brabham taking the slightly better starting place.
run
Guest starter Mike Fisher was unable to start the race due to a defect in his fuel pump . The 1967 Canadian Grand Prix was his only GP participation.
Shortly after take-off, Gurney hit Jim Clark's Lotus. Both were able to continue the race at first apparently unaffected. However, Gurney retired a few laps later because of his radiator damaged in the accident. In the first laps, Hill was in the lead, ahead of Amon. However, both were overtaken by Clark by the third lap, who from then on dominated the race even though his clutch failed.
Hill had to retire on the 18th lap because of a broken half-wave. As a result, Brabham came in third. However, since Hulme was right behind him in fourth place, he had no chance of the world title this way.
Amon defended second place until shortly before the end of the race. Then he was hampered by the misfiring of the Ferrari engine caused by lack of fuel. As a result, Brabham, Hulme and Surtees were able to pass him. Since Amon's last lap was too slow to be counted, he finally came in ninth.
Denis Hulme won the drivers' world championship for the first and only time. To this day he is the only New Zealander who has succeeded in doing this.
