Gökşin Sipahioğlu

Gökşin Sipahioğlu (born December 28, 1926 in Izmir ; † October 5, 2011 in Paris ) was a Turkish press photographer and founder of the renowned photo agency Sipa Press .

Life

Sipahioğlu initially worked for the newspaper " Hürriyet ". In 1973 he founded the Sipa Press agency in Paris with the American journalist Phyllis Springer, which specialized in reportage photography. As a photographer, Sipahioglu reported on numerous political events such as the February coup in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and the assassination attempt on the Olympic Games in 1972. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 he came to Cuba disguised as a sailor and was "the only western photographer before Place".

Sipahioğlu sold the agency to the French media group Sud Communications in 2001. In 2010, Sipa Press was taken over by the German dapd news agency .
