The dapd news agency was a news agency founded in September 2010 and based in Berlin . It emerged from the former news agency Deutscher Depeschendienst and the German service of the American news agency Associated Press (AP). The owners were the financial investors Martin Vorderwülbecke and Peter Löw , founders of the Luxembourg investment company bluO . Cord Dreyer was managing director and editor-in-chief until October 2, 2012 . On February 1, 2013, after an initial insolvency on October 2, 2012, the company was transferred to dapd news agency Beteiligungs GmbH, which continued the business operations of eight insolvent dapd companies. Ulrich Ende became managing director . On March 1, 2013, the dapd news agency filed for bankruptcy again and on April 11, 2013 it ceased operations.

According to its own information, the service had a base of 700 customers in April 2012 and provided up to 850 messages and 2,500 photos a day. In addition to German daily newspapers, journals and magazines, online media, TV and radio stations, customers also included parties and governments, companies, institutions and associations. The agency offered its own sports service from August 1, 2011, making it the second news agency with a full range in Germany alongside the German Press Agency (dpa). On October 2, 2012, dapd filed for bankruptcy. Employees and the public were completely surprised by the move. According to the insolvency plan published at the end of November 2012, 98 permanent employees of the dapd lost their jobs. In connection with the bankruptcy, the exclusive contract with AP was also lost. In addition, the basic sports service was discontinued.

On April 11, 2013, the insolvency administrator announced that the agency would cease operations on the same day at 5 p.m. The delivery of messages, images, graphics and videos to customers ended at this point.

history

In December 2009, ddp media holding AG, now renamed HQTA AG, took over the German-language service of the American news agency AP and initially renamed it DAPD Deutscher Auslands-Depeschendienst (DAPD). On July 1, 2010, at a press conference, dapd presented the revised website dapd.de in the new corporate design and at the same time made the dapd news planner available as an editorial tool. In September 2010 a new joint service of the two previous individual agencies started.

In July 2011 it became known that the company had bought the loss-making French photo agency Sipa Press from the pharmaceutical and media entrepreneur Pierre Fabre . Sipa Press was founded in 1973 by Gökşin Sipahioğlu . The agency was supposed to compete with Agence France-Presse (AFP).

In January 2012 it became known that dapd wanted to start its own news agency in France as a direct competitor to the market leader Agence France-Presse (AFP). In addition to the 60 Sipa employees, 35 text journalists should also come. In June 2012, a few months before the start of the new service, the long-time AFP editor-in-chief Jean-Luc Testault moved to Sipa-Press.

On April 1, 2012, dapd acquired the picture agency Picture Press from Gruner + Jahr , at the same time a long-term cooperation in the syndication business for the German market was agreed.

Controversy

In February 2012, the NDR media magazine Zapp reported critically about the management of employees and the agency's business methods.

Dapd also supplied news to the Federal Press Office . The price paid by the Federal Press Office for this was 1.6 million euros a year.

Dapd also supplied the Federal Foreign Office . Competitor dpa, who had previously carried out this contract without a public tender, had unsuccessfully defended itself in court against the award.

Holding and sister company

Until December 2012, HQTA AG also included the communications service provider ddp direct GmbH, which supports around 1,200 customers with their PR measures, as well as the press image agency ddp images GmbH. On October 1, 2013, ddp direct went bankrupt. In April 2010, the holding company took over the majority in Munich-based airmotion GmbH, a B2B provider specializing in web content . In 2011 the French photo agency SIPA-Press was taken over.

insolvency

On October 2, 2012, the company branches dapd Nachrichtenagentur and dapd Nachrichten filed for bankruptcy under self-administration . The same step was announced for six other companies in the DAPD group for October 4, 2012 (dapd Korrespondenz und Recherche GmbH, dapd International Service GmbH, dapd Sport GmbH, dfd Foto Service GmbH, dapd video GmbH and News and Medien Service Exklusiv GmbH). DAPD Media Holding AG and another 18 associated companies are not affected. Cord Dreyer also resigned from his position as managing director. In October 2012, dapd media holding AG was renamed HQTA AG. On December 5, 2012, the ordinary insolvency proceedings were opened for dapd Nachrichtenagentur GmbH and 6 other subsidiaries of the agency group. On March 1, 2013, the dapd news agency Beteiligungs GmbH filed for insolvency at the local court in Berlin-Charlottenburg. On April 11th at 5 p.m., operations ceased.
