Reports

background

There were no changes in the field of participants compared to the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Riccardo Patrese secured pole position in front of his teammate Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna , who qualified for third place on the grid despite a neck pain caused by a jet ski accident the weekend before and a rollover during Friday practice. Jean Alesi took fourth place ahead of Gerhard Berger , Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost .

Nicola Larini was excluded from the race weekend because of a non-compliant rear wing .

run

The first attempt at take-off was stopped when a firefighter walked on the track believing he had identified a fire due to smoke at the rear of JJ Lehto's car . This turned out to be incorrect, so that Lehto was able to make the second start attempt without changing the car in the meantime. However, this attempt was also aborted by the waving of yellow flags. Olivier Grouillard switched off his engine at the warning signal. Since it was not possible to start the engine independently, he had to start the race from last place on the third attempt to start, which was completed after a further introductory lap.

Mansell took the lead ahead of Alesi, Senna, Patrese, Berger and Piquet. In the second lap, Senna passed Alesi. Two laps later, Patrese also succeeded. Berger had to retire after four laps due to an engine failure.

On the eleventh lap, Patrese took second place from Senna and caught up with his leading team-mate Mansell, who had to give him the top position on lap 15 due to engine problems.

Towards the end of the race, Mansell was able to catch up with Patrese again. However, he defended himself successfully and thus won ahead of his teammate and Senna. A few meters from the finish, Andrea de Cesaris coasted , which could be explained by a drop in fuel pressure. Since he had illegally got out of the car in an attempt to push his car across the finish line, he was initially disqualified. However, this decision was reversed a little later. Thus, because of the distance he had covered, he was classified fourth ahead of Roberto Moreno and Éric Bernard .

As a result of the two false starts, the race distance was shortened by two laps.
