The 1991 Portuguese Grand Prix took place on September 22nd at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist near Estoril and was the 13th race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Except for the fact that Johnny Herbert returned to Formula 1 instead of Michael Bartels after another outing in the Japanese Formula 3000 , the same drivers competed in the same teams for the fourth last race of the year in Portugal that had won the Grand Prix two weeks earlier denied by Italy .

At AGS , two copies of a new racing car with the designation JH27 were used.

training

Riccardo Patrese emerged from the qualification rounds as a pole setter, although he had to switch to a T-car after an engine failure . Gerhard Berger qualified for second place on the grid. Only in the second row did the favorite teammates of the two, who were ahead in the world championship, follow. Ayrton Senna was ahead of Nigel Mansell in this ranking as well as on the grid . The lap times of the two Ferrari pilots Alain Prost and Jean Alesi , who formed the third row, were significantly higher than those of Williams - and McLaren -Fahrer. Pierluigi Martini was framed in ninth position by the two Leyton House drivers Maurício Gugelmin and Ivan Capelli . Michael Schumacher qualified for tenth place in front of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet , who had identical material available.

run

After several tough maneuvers, in which both Senna and Berger each had to move once to the meadow next to the track in order to avoid collisions, the Williams drivers Patrese and Mansell finished the first lap in first and second place. According to the stable order , Patrese let his teammate, who still had realistic chances of winning the world championship, pass in round 18.

Problems arose during Mansell's pit stop when the right rear wheel nut initially jammed and was then damaged when it was removed. While one of the mechanics was getting a spare part, others signaled to Mansell that he could go on. As he accelerated, the new rear wheel, which had not been properly attached, came off. Mansell stopped immediately, but at this point was no longer in the area of his stopping position, but was already back in the actual pit lane. The mechanics ran to the car and fastened the missing wheel with a spare nut. Since this work was carried out illegally in the lane of the pit lane, Mansell was disqualified by the race director by means of the black flag, after initially driving back on the track almost one lap behind and then moving up eleven positions within 16 laps had fought.

Patrese led in front of Senna and Berger. The Austrian overtook his teammate on lap 35, but retired shortly afterwards due to an engine failure. Since Prost did not reach the finish line either, Alesi was third ahead of Martini and the two Benetton drivers Piquet and Schumacher.
