Reports
background
After Alain Prost had repeatedly expressed negative comments about Scuderia Ferrari , especially during the second half of the season , it was announced that he would still be contractually bound to the traditional Italian racing team in the 1992 season , but without competing. The team was so annoyed that he was no longer allowed to compete even at the season finale, but Gianni Morbidelli was signed as a short-term replacement driver. The vacated place at Minardi was taken by Roberto Moreno , who thus competed for another team for the third time in the 1991 season.
Since Éric Bernard could not compete due to his injuries sustained two weeks earlier during training for the Japanese Grand Prix , Gérard Larrousse agreed to let Bertrand Gachot, who had been released from prison a few weeks earlier, contest the final run for his team.
training
The two drivers of the McLaren team, leading in the constructors' championship standings, dominated qualifying. Ayrton Senna , already established as the driver's world champion, secured pole position in front of Gerhard Berger . The second row was shared by the two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese , who hoped to win the constructors' title for their team with a good race result and the poor performance of the McLaren competitors. The Benetton teammates Nelson Piquet and Michael Schumacher formed the third row in front of the two Ferraris of Jean Alesi and Gianni Morbidelli.
run
The start was initially postponed due to heavy rain that began around an hour before the scheduled start time. When it slacked off a little, the race finally started and Senna took the lead ahead of Berger, Mansell and Schumacher. On the third lap, Mansell took second place from Berger.
When the two Benetton drivers collided on lap five, Schumacher spun and was rammed by Alesi, who was unable to evade in time. Thierry Boutsen , Satoru Nakajima , Nicola Larini and Pierluigi Martini also retired due to accidents.
After the rain increased again up to lap 13, Maurício Gugelmin crashed into the pit wall. Two marshals were slightly injured. When Mansell and Berger had also turned off due to aquaplaning , Senna, among others, signaled to the race management that the race should be abandoned due to the difficult conditions. This was followed after 16 laps. However, the status after 14 laps was rated. Accordingly, Senna was the winner ahead of Mansell, Berger, Piquet, Patrese and Morbidelli. Since significantly less than 75 percent of the planned race distance had been completed, only half the number of points was awarded.
McLaren won the 1991 constructors' championship.
With a distance of just 53 kilometers and a duration of less than 25 minutes, the 1991 Australian Grand Prix is considered the shortest race in Formula 1 history.
