history

In 1887, the Irish brothers sailed William M. Foster and Ralph R. Foster from New York to Melbourne and founded the brewery Foster's Brewing Company on the Rokeby Street in Collingwood . The first Foster's was brewed in 1888 and relatively new to Australia as a local light beer.

At the turn of the century Foster's was already being delivered to all Australian states and exported to Samoa and South Africa . In 1908, not long after the merger with Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), the Foster's brewery on Rokeby Street closed and the Foster's name was almost lost. CUB only continued brewing Foster's because they were forced to do so by laws in the states of Queensland and Western Australia .

The Foster's yeast , which is still in use today , was brought to Carlton in 1923 by Professor Jorgensen in Denmark . Since 1970, Foster's have been imported in bulk from Australia to Europe. It also became known there for its typical blue, white and gold can. In 1971 Fosters became famous in England with Barry Humphrie's successful film "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" , in which the actor in Bazza held almost the entire film in a Foster's hand. In 1972 Foster's came to the USA. The success there is closely linked to the sponsorship of sports events. Fosters sponsored the America's Cup in 1972 and sponsored tennis professionals like John Newcombe . The novelty value of the large 26th oz. Cans known as oil canisters also went a long way in the popularity of the Foster's brand. In 1981 Foster's yeast was sent to England to brew Foster's Draft. Foster's Draft was a modified version of Foster's Lager to suit the English palate. Sales rose and locally brewed Foster's lager was first sold in England in 1984.

In 1986, CUB began brewing Foster's in Canada in partnership with Carling OKeefe Ltd.

Breweries

Today Fosters is produced worldwide and is sold in more than 150 countries. In France, Foster's is produced by the Heineken breweries in Schiltigheim and Marseille .

advertising

The growth of Foster's was supported by actor Paul Hogan , who later made a career as "Crocodile Dundee" . At the time of his first appearance for Foster's, he had given up his job as a rigger on the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge and was already a popular comedian. His first Foster's advertisement read as follows:

“G'Day. They've asked me over from Oz to introduce youse all to Foster's Draft, here it is. Cripes! I'd better start with the basics. It's a light, golden liquid, like, except for the white bit on top, the head, and it's brewed from malt, yeast and hops. Technical term is warehouse. That's STOCK. But everyone calls it Foster's. Ahhhh, ripper! Tastes like an angel cryin 'on yer tongue. Foster's. "

Foster's was the official Olympic beer for Australia at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . On April 1, 1985, the Melbourne Cup (a horse race) was renamed Foster's Melbourne Cup. Foster's was the official beer of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Adelaide and Melbourne, as well as the "Aussi Rules grand Final" . Foster's also sponsors cycling, tennis and golf.

drink

Foster's Lager has a slight malt character. The beer is brewed in Germany according to an original Australian recipe. The ingredients differ from a normal beer (purity law) and are imported from Australia to ensure the original taste. The ingredients are water, malt, hops and glucose syrup . The alcohol content is 5%. The original wort is given as 11.2 degrees Plato.

Success in Australia

Although Foster's Lager is marketed internationally as the Australian beer, it is not particularly successful in its home country. The best-selling beer brands there are Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draft , also made by the Foster's Group , followed by Toohey's and XXXX (both made by Lion Nathan ).
