The Fosters is an American television series starring Teri Polo and Sherri Saum , which was produced from 2013 to 2018 by Nuyorican Productions and Prodco Inc. for the television channel Freeform (until January 2016 ABC Family ). The series is about the life of a lesbian couple with three children who take two foster children into their household. It first aired in the United States on June 3, 2013, following the series finale of The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family.

In Germany, the series has been broadcast on Disney Channel since November 17, 2014 .

action

The policewoman Stef and the deputy headmistress Lena Foster live with Stef's biological son Brandon and the adopted children Jesus and Mariana. In the pilot episode, Stef and Lena take on the teenager Callie, who already had to live with different foster parents. Her brother Jude also comes to the Fosters. Callie's bad experiences in the educational system, Mariana's contact with her birth mother and Brandon's feelings for the new family member turn the Foster's life upside down.

production

In July 2012, it was announced that Jennifer Lopez and her production company Nuyorican Productions were developing a family series for ABC Family television . A month later, the broadcaster gave the green light for the production of a pilot episode . As Lopez revealed in an interview, she would - if the series is ordered - make a guest appearance. In September 2012 the two main female lead roles were given to Teri Polo and Sherri Saum . A few days later, Maia Mitchell and David Lambert were cast for other leading roles. Another leading role went to the actor Jake T. Austin , known from The Wizards of Waverly Place , who plays the role of the son Jesus .

In early February 2013, ABC Family ordered a first season of the series. Production began on April 5, 2013 in Burbank , California . The number of episodes of the first season was increased to a full season length in the form of 21 episodes at the end of July 2013. ABC Family ordered a second season in October 2013 before this second half of the season began broadcasting. The broadcast has been on ABC Family since June 16, 2014. Almost a week before the second half of the second season was broadcast, the broadcaster extended the series by a third season. The extension into a fourth season took place at the end of November 2015. On January 10, 2017, the series was extended by a fifth season, which will include the 100th episode of the series.

reception

criticism

Even before the series was broadcast on American television, the conservative association One Million Moms called for a boycott of the series. A statement reads: “Obviously, ABC has lost its mind. They persisted, so neither will we. ABC's family network has a number of anti-family shows on its program and they plan to add another to their growing list. ABC Family has hired a serial pilot from Jennifer Lopez's Nuyorican production studio, about a lesbian couple and their ragged family. Many families have already noticed that ABC Family is anything but family-friendly. But because family is in the name of the station, we thought a warning should be given to those who continue to watch the station. "
