Christopher John Rome Meyer , KCMG (born February 22, 1944 ) is a former British diplomat who was briefly ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997 and ambassador to the USA from 1997 to 2003 .

Life

After attending Lancing College, founded in 1848, Christopher John Rome Meyer studied at the Peterhouse of the University of Cambridge . He then entered the diplomatic service in 1966 and was subsequently employed at numerous diplomatic missions and in the Ministry of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) . Between 1982 and 1984 he was Counselor and Chancellor at the Embassy in the Soviet Union, and from 1984 to 1986 he was Head of the Intelligence Unit in the Ministry of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, before he was Press Secretary to Prime Minister John Major from 1986 to 1988 . In 1988 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his services . He then moved to the US embassy , where he was first envoy for trade between 1989 and 1992 and envoy from 1992 to 1993. On his return, he replaced Gus O'Donnell, Baron O'Donnell as press secretary to Prime Minister John Major in 1994 and held this position until he was replaced by Alastair Campbell in 1996.

Meyer then succeeded Nigel Broomfield as ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997 , but was replaced a short time later by Paul Lever . He then succeeded John Olav Kerr as ambassador to the USA in 1997 . He held this post until his retirement in 2003, after which David Manning became his successor there. For his many years of service in the diplomatic service, he was beaten on December 31, 1997 to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the suffix "Sir".

Upon his return, Christopher Meyer replaced Robert Pinker as chairman of the Press Complaints Commission , a voluntary regulator of newspapers, magazines and other press products, and held that position until he was replaced by Peta Buscombe, Baroness Buscombe in 2009. He has been with Catherine Irene since 1997 Jacqueline Meyer , who was raised to Baroness Meyer , of Nine Elms in the London Borough of Wandsworth on June 19, 2018 for her commitment as founding chairwoman of the organization against child abuse and for finding missing children PACT (Parents and Abducted Children Together) .
