Lancing College
Lancing College (formerly College of St. Mary and St. Nicholas ) is a private English school in West Sussex . It was founded in 1848 by the Anglican clergyman Nathaniel Woodard . About 500 boys and girls are currently attending the boarding school. Lancing College was the first of more than 30 private schools that Woodard founded.
Location and school grounds
Lancing College is located on 2.2 square kilometers near the town of Lancing in West Sussex, west of the city of Brighton and Hove . The school is located on a hill on the South Downs and dominates the surrounding landscape with its neo-Gothic school church. In addition to the large chapel, the historic school building and the numerous residential buildings each for 30 to 80 pupils characterize the school grounds.
In addition, the school has its own farm, direct river access, 28 tennis courts, several squash courts, a swimming pool, a gym, a fitness room, two theaters, an extensive sports area and two libraries.
School life
The school day at Lancing College begins with a morning wake-up call and ends after various sports activities at 6 p.m. in the evening. Between 19:00 and 21:00 is Evening School time . During this time, 13-18 year old students are expected to take care of homework and preparation.
In addition to the school education, the Lancing College attaches great importance to a basic Christian and athletic education. Attending the Anglican service is compulsory for all students (school motto: Beati Mundo Corde - “Blessed are the pure of heart”, Mt 5.8 VUL ). In the sporting area there are offers such as football, tennis, rugby, squash, badminton, lacrosse, basketball, hockey, running, gardening, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and sailing. There are also debating groups and the Combined Cadet Force .

The annual tuition fee is approximately £ 24,000 . In addition, the school regularly receives donations from its numerous well-known graduates. There are musical and academic scholarships for a small number of students.
Lancing College Preparatory School at Mowden
For several years now, Lancing College has had its own preparatory school, the Lancing College Preparatory School at Mowden . The students of this school are prepared for a school time at Lancing College and can use all offers of the college. A shuttle bus service was set up for this.
chapel
The Lancing College chapel is the largest school chapel in the world. The foundation stone was laid in 1868. It is about 50 meters high. The foundations extend 20 meters deep into the ground. A 100 meter high tower planned for the west side was never completed. The sandstone chapel was designed by Richard Cromwell Carpenter in the English Gothic style of the 14th century.
The interior is characterized by the largest rose window in England, which has a diameter of 9.75 meters. Furthermore, the grave of the school founder and two organs can be seen in the chapel.
In 1911 the chapel was dedicated to Saints Mary and Nicholas . It is open to the general public from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
