George Baker MBE (born April 1, 1931 in Varna , Bulgaria , † October 7, 2011 in West Lavington , Wiltshire ) was a British actor .

Life

George Baker was born in Bulgaria in 1931, the son of the British Vice Consul Frank Baker; his mother was a nurse with the Red Cross . He had four siblings, three brothers and a sister. In 1939, after the outbreak of World War II , Baker's mother fled to England with the children. The family man, whom Baker never saw again afterwards, is believed to have died in the war. As a child he attended college in Lancing , where he discovered his love for literature and acting . As a young man, Baker worked as a mechanical engineer and was also briefly involved in politics, as a member of the district council of the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar .

Baker played his first major role in the movie The Avenger in the Purple Coat . In 1956, Baker appeared in the British comedy The Extra Day, which was loaned by the film company United Artists .

The actor is best known for his participation in numerous television series and mini-series for television. These include appearances in episodes of the television series Commissioner Maigret , The Wednesday Play , The Baron , Number 6 , Z Cars , Inspector Barnaby , The 2 , A Case for Scotland Yard , No Pardon for Guardian Angels , Doctor Who , Robin of Sherwood , Jim Bergerac , Coronation Street and I, Claudius, Kaiser and God .

The actor appeared in a total of three films by Eon Productions Ltd. produced James Bond film series: In You Only Live Twice , Baker plays a NASA employee , in On Her Majesty's Secret Service , Baker slips into the role of the heraldist Sir Hillary Bray and synchronizes the James Bond actor George Lazenby as soon as he enters Bakers Role slips and meets Ernst Stavro Blofeld and in 1977 in the movie The Spy Who Loved Me as Captain Benson, a submarine commander.

Between 1987 and 2000, George Baker played the British police officer Det. Chief Insp. Reg Wexford in a total of 23 television films.

George Baker was married three times: all three wives were actresses. His first marriage to Julia Squire (who had four daughters) was divorced, and his second marriage was to Sally Home, who died in 1992 (one daughter). The actor was married to Louie Ramsay from 1993 until her death (March 2011).
