Robin Hood (Original title: Robin of Sherwood ) is a British adventure and fantasy television series, which was produced by the production company Goldcrest Films from 1983 to 1985 on behalf of the Bristol television broadcaster HTV (now: ITV ) . The series was conceived by the British screenwriter Richard Carpenter ; Paul Knight was the producer .

General

At the center of the series are the medieval hero Robin Hood and his gang of outlaws who have their refuge in Sherwood Forest and fight against the oppression of their people - the Anglo-Saxon serfs - by the Norman nobility . According to the well-known legend, Robin's main opponent in this interpretation is the Sheriff of Nottingham Robert de Rainault and his steward Sir Guy of Gisburne.

Robin Hood mixes the classic legend with supernatural elements such as black magic and pagan gods. Another characteristic of the series is the portrayal of medieval life, which strives for authenticity ; In addition to appropriate costumes for the actors, this is particularly evident in the locations - almost never was shot in the studio, but in the north and west of England, in real castles, in wooded areas and in reconstructed medieval villages. Modern make-up effects were dispensed with and great importance was attached to naturalness when choosing the actors, without paying attention to the beauty ideals common in Hollywood .

The atmosphere of the time is reinforced by the inclusion of many epoch-typical themes. The viewer encounters protagonists such as the Knights Templar , Assassins , apocalyptic flagellants and leprous pilgrims. Medieval persecution of Jews is taken up with the description of a pogrom as well as problems of marriage policy and the allocation of offices resulting from feudal society .

The series consists of a total of three seasons. Robin of Loxley (played by British actor Michael Praed ) leads the Outlaws for the first two seasons , while the count's son Robert of Huntingdon (played by Sean Connery's son Jason Connery ) takes the lead in the third season .

The change of the main actor Praed, who took on a role on Broadway , was followed by a number of other changes: In addition to the replacement of the main role, there was also a change in the production management, which from now on Esta Charkham should take over. In addition, the story had to be rewritten at short notice, as Michael Praed's departure was not planned and the end of the story was not yet in sight. Robin Hood's death, which seems very abruptly staged, left a return open to Praed. When the news of Robin Hood's death was transmitted to King John, the messenger had to admit that the body - for inexplicable reasons - could not be found.

The series was accompanied by music from the Irish Celtic folk band Clannad . The soundtrack was released on the Legend album and won several awards.

action

The first episode of the series begins in England in the year 1180. Robin's home village Loxley is attacked and destroyed by Norman soldiers under the leadership of the Sheriff of Nottingham . Robin's father, the Anglo-Saxon rebel Ailric of Loxley, is killed. The sheriff takes a special Celtic artifact from him: the Silver Arrow. The young Robin can hide with a miller and grows up with him.

Fifteen years later, Robin and his stepbrother, miller's son Much, are incarcerated in Nottingham for poaching . Together with three other prisoners - including William Scathlock (Will Scarlett) - they manage to escape to Sherwood Forest . There Robin Herne meets the hunter , a mystical forest deity in human form, who tells him his fate as "The Hooded Man" = literally: "The man with the hood", alternatively "The masked / hooded man ") and resistance fighters against the tyrannical Norman rule prophesied. Robin initially rejects these prophecies, but later accepts them as his fate.

In the further course of the pilot episode, Robin receives additional comrades-in-arms, so that his gang finally consists of the following people: Much, Will Scarlett, John Little (called Little John), Brother Tuck, Nasir (a Saracen warrior) and Lady Marion (daughter of the crusader Sir Richard of Leaford), who becomes Robin's wife at the end of the pilot episode.

Together with these six companions, Robin experiences a wide variety of adventures in the first and second season (with the principle of “stealing from the rich and giving to the poor”, of course) until an ambush by the Sheriff of Nottingham Robin in the last episode of the second season life costs; he sacrifices himself for Marion and Much, who can escape to Sherwood in this way. The remaining outlaws, captured by the sheriff's soldiers, are freed by a stranger who hides his face.

In the third season it finally turns out that this stranger is actually the successor to Robin of Loxley - Robert of Huntingdon, the son of a wealthy count . Herne has chosen him to be the new leader of the rebels, but first Robert has to reunite the now scattered outlaws and prove to them that he is indeed the chosen one. This is followed by further adventures with the sheriff and other adversaries until the series comes to an open end in the last episode of this season.
