Clannad is an Irish musical group. Her musical style is a mix of Irish folk , rock , new age and world music .
Band history
Clannad was founded in Gweedore , County Donegal by the Brennan family. The name stands for an Clann a s D obhair ( a clan or a family from Dobhair - Gaoth Dobhair is the Irish name for Gweedore).
Moya Brennan , Ciarán Brennan and Pól Brennan performed early in their father Leo's pub . After a short time the formation was completed by their uncles Noel Duggan and Pádraig Duggan . In 1970 they won a talent competition in Letterkenny . As usual in the Gaeltacht , their mother tongue is Irish and not English.
In 1973 her first album Clannad was released . Clannad quickly gained fans, especially in their home country and in Germany. Máire's (Moya's) sister Eithne was also a member of the band from 1979 to 1982 and played on the albums Crann Ull and Fuaim . She then started a successful solo career as Enya .
In the winter of 1982 Clannad created the theme music for the BBC television film Harry's Game , which made it into the top 5 of the UK charts . 1983 followed the album Magical Ring and 1984 Legend as the soundtrack for the successful British television series Robin of Sherwood (German title: Robin Hood ). Clannad won the BAFTA TV Award for the best original TV film music.
In 1985 the album Macalla was released , on which Clannad increasingly used electronic instruments and effects. It also contained a duet by Máire Ní Bhraonáin with U2 singer Bono ( In a Lifetime ), which reached high chart positions in 1986 and again in 1989.
The follow-up album Sirius was completed by the band in Los Angeles ; they worked with local musicians. In 1989 the first best-of album Past Present was released , which contained a selection of old songs as well as some new compositions. It reached the top 10 on the UK charts and eventually went platinum . Pol then left the band and devoted himself to his own projects. Since he was the leading head up until then, the other musicians had to deal more with the writing and setting of pieces.
In 1992 the song Theme from Harry's Game was used for the film The Hour of the Patriots . In the same year, the song I Will Find You was used in Michael Mann's film The Last of the Mohicans . The title appeared the following year (1993) on the album Banba .
With the 1997 album Landmarks Clannad won a Grammy Award in the New Age category.
Published in 1999 Nick Bracegirdle (aka Chicane ) a trance - Remix of Theme from Harry's Game , entitled Salt Water . The new version achieved high chart positions in various European countries and became a club hit.
After a long break, Clannad gave several concerts in 2007 in the British Isles and at European folk festivals. In the same year they received the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the presentation of the Meteor Awards .
Pádraig Duggan died on August 9, 2016 at the age of 67 in Dublin.
