Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin ( Irish [ mˠaːrʲə nʲiː vɾˠiːn̪ˠaːn ], English called Máire or Moya Brennan ; born August 4, 1952 in Gweedore , Ireland ) is an Irish singer , harpist and songwriter .

Life

Moya Brennan is the eldest of nine children of the married couple Máire, born Dhúgáin, a music teacher, and Leo Brennan, a professional musician. One of her sisters is known by the stage name Enya .

Moya Brennan grew up in County Donegal , northwest Ireland , where the Irish language is still widely spoken. She studied harp, piano and singing at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and taught music at Holy Cross College in Falcarragh .

Brennan is a member of the Irish music group Clannad , whose cast is made up entirely of family members and whose cast also includes her sister Enya at times . After many years of musical involvement with Clannad, Moya released her first solo album under the title Máire on Atlantic Records in 1992 . Misty Eyed Adventures at BMG followed two years later. In 1995 she sang the ballad You're the One in a duet with Shane MacGowan , the former front man of the Pogues . In 1998, Perfect Time was released by Word Records . Whisper to the Wild Water followed a year later. The album was nominated in 2001 for a Grammy Award in the New Age category.

In 2000 her autobiography The Other Side of The Rainbow was initially only published in English, then also in German under the title Mein irisches Leben . Since 2003 she has called herself Moya Brennan because there were frequent misunderstandings during the pronunciation. Her album Two Horizons was released by Universal in 2003 and was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the New Age category. In 2005, An Irish Christmas was an album with Christmas carols. The album Signature , released in 2006, refers to Moya Brennan's path in many songs.

She also sang the songs Miles and Miles and Falling for the Schiller music project , which appeared on the studio album Tag und Nacht (tracks no. 6 and 13) released in 2005 and with which she also accompanied Schiller live.

In 2004 there was a collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the music for the US film King Arthur . On August 20, 2005 Brennan joined Pope Benedict XVI. at the World Youth Day in Cologne as part of the vigil prayer in front of an audience of millions. She is also an ambassador for the Christoffel Mission for the Blind .

Moya Brennan is also a member of the music group "T with the Maggies", which has existed since 2009, together with Tríona and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh .

The album Timeless (2019) together with Cormac de Barra contains seven new songs (five in Gaelic), two traditionals and a cover version of Christine McVie's Songbird .
