Enya
Enya / ɛnʲə / (* 17th May 1961 as Eithne Ní Pádraigín Bhraonáin / ɛnʲə pˠɑːd̺.ɾˠɪɡʲiːnʲ NI vɾˠiːn̪ˠaːn / in Gaoth Dobhair , County Donegal ) is an Irish New Age - musician , singer and songwriter . By 2008 she had sold over 70 million albums worldwide.
Life
Enya is the sixth of the nine children of Leo and Maire (called Baba) Brennan. The spelling Enya is based on the Anglicisation of the frequent Irish first name Eithne, i.e. its alignment to the English phonography with unchanged pronunciation. It means "little fire". She has four sisters, including singer Moya , and four brothers, including singer Pól . She spent her childhood in Gaoth Dobhair . Until the age of three, Enya grew up in a purely Irish-speaking environment.
At the age of eleven, she and her sisters began to play the piano in a monastery , mainly classical music . From the age of 11 to 17 she attended a Catholic school in Milford run by the Loreto Sisters . After finishing school, she joined her family's band, Clannad . In 1982 she left the group together with Nicky Ryan , the band's producer at the time, and from then on lived with him and his wife Roma in a house in Artane , north of Dublin . Enya has lived in Dublin since 1997 in a small castle called Manderley Castle (formerly Ayesha Castle), named after the castle in her favorite film Rebecca . She rarely gives interviews.
music
At Clannad , Enya played with three siblings and their two uncles. After leaving the band, she started her solo career in the mid-1980s. The lyrics for Enya's title are written by Roma Ryan and her husband Nicky Ryan is responsible for the production . Her international breakthrough came in 1988 with the single Orinoco Flow (Sail away) , which was number 1 in Great Britain and number 2 in Germany. The accompanying album Watermark was also a top 10 success in Europe. Like Watermark , Enya's other albums, Shepherd Moons (1991), The Celts (originally released in 1986, re-released internationally in 1992), The Memory of Trees (1995) and the greatest hits record Paint the Sky with Stars (1997) received gold or platinum in the UK, Germany and also the USA.
Only Time , which is usedto background music for a key scenein the feature film Sweet November , was initially not very successful. The title became internationally known through the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , when it was used as background music for the television broadcast . As a result, Only Time reached the top 10 of the US Billboard charts , while the accompanying album A Day Without Rain also entered the charts again and climbed to number 2. In Germany, too, this triggered renewed demand for the piece, so that Only Time made it back to number 1 in the German single charts. Just a few weeks later, the album A Day Without Rain also topped the charts. The single and album did not have nearly this success in other important markets such as the United Kingdom , France or Australia . In 2001, Enya received the echo for the most successful international single on the German market and another nomination for the most successful album. Enya donated the income from the song to the survivors of the attack victims and the New York firefighters .
In January 2002 she released May It Be , the theme song of the first part of the film series The Lord of the Rings . While the single almost reached the top 50 in Great Britain, its new popularity continued in Germany: May It Be went straight to number 1 in the German single charts. The play was also nominated for an Oscar . In 2005, Enya released her album Amarantine , on which the Loxian language developed by Roma Ryan was used for the first time . On November 20, 2009, her album The Very Best Of , a compilation of her greatest successes selected by Enya, was released .
Her instrumental piece Boadicea was used succinctly as a sample in two number one hits: In Ready or Not by the Fugees (1996) and in I Don't Wanna Know by Mario Winans featuring P. Diddy and Enya. In addition, Boadicea was also used for the song Secret Love by Magnetic Pulstar and can be heard in the soundtrack of the movie Sleepwalker . The song Orinoco Flow from the album Watermark (1988) is because of the chorus “Sail Away” and the verses typical for cruises “Let me sail, let me sail, let the Orinoco flow […] From Bissau to Palau in the shade of Avalon. From Fiji to Tiree and the isles of Ebony. From Peru to Cebu, feel the power of Babylon. From Bali to Cali, far beneath the Coral Sea “is the ship's departure melody of the AIDA fleet, which, however, may only be used in a cover version at the request of the singer.
The titles "Caribbean Blue" and "Only Time" were used in the Marvel comic film Deadpool 2 . Marvel, as producer, used the title as a contrast to the film, because in both cases there are fight scenes. “Caribbean Blue” is used in the super duper cut when Deadpool takes out Asian villains in a bathhouse. "Only Time", however, in the fight of Juggernaut, when he destroyed the convoy.
Enya's music videos show a strong connection to nature, a strong reference to the sea and an antiquated, romantic weakness. In some videos (especially those made in the 1980s and early 1990s) actors like Enya dress themselves in a fashion that was common in Victorian times . In general, your videos have a slow pace, sometimes also slow motion effects. With a seven-year gap to its predecessor, Enya's new album, Dark Sky Island , was released on November 20, 2015 . In terms of music, this brings her closer to her first album Watermark .
