Amarantine is Enya's sixth studio album . It was released in November 2005. In 2006 the Amarantine Special Christmas Edition was released , which contains a second CD with four other titles.
background
The word "amarantine" means "immortal", but in English it is mainly written as "amaranth" or "amaranthus". “Amarantine” does not appear in English dictionaries. Enya was inspired by the Greek word “amarantos”. Amaranth is a genus of plants that grows almost everywhere due to its modesty and is interpreted in a poetic sense as a symbol of immortality.
The artist herself commented on this as follows:
“We called the album Amarantine because the title expresses immortality. Many poets use this word to describe an immortal flower, and I love that idea. We worked on this album for two years and it is an exciting moment for me when in the end everything comes to bloom and people can hear what we have done during that time. "
The songs Less than a Pearl , The River Sings and Water Shows the Hidden Heart are sung in the " Loxian " language invented by Roma Ryan . The booklet contains the text in Loxian - and accordingly illegible - characters as well as the English translation. The song Sumiregusa ( Wild Violet ) is sung in Japanese. The text is in a Latin transcription and an English translation in the booklet .
Single releases
The songs Amarantine and It's in the Rain were released as a single. The second CD of the 2006 Christmas edition contains four previously unpublished Christmas carols .
Success and reception
In 2007, Enya won the Grammy for "Best New Age Album" with Amarantine . The album sold very well worldwide. In Germany it reached number 3 in the album charts and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 30 weeks, with two re-entry. It also achieved triple gold status in Germany (over 300,000 copies sold). Despite these successes, critics complained about the lack of imagination of Enya's album concepts, which always followed the same pattern.
