Mario Winans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mario Winans (born August 27, 1974 in Orangeburg, South Carolina ) is an American music producer , songwriter and singer. He became famous in 2004 with his album Hurt No More and the hit single "I Don't Wanna Know".

Life

youth

Winans was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina , but spent much of his childhood in Detroit , Michigan . As the son of Marvin and Vickie Winans and nephew of the gospel singers BeBe and CeCe Winans , he came into contact with church music and rhythm & blues very early on. He learned to play piano, keyboard and drums in school.

Right after high school he started producing and writing his own gospel bands. However, Winans earned his first recognition for his work with Fred Hammond, The Anointed and The Clark Sisters, later he mainly drew attention to himself through his productions on the albums of various family members.

Career

In the mid-1990s , Mario Winans signed an exclusive production contract with Dallas Austin's Rowdy Records. He finally achieved his breakthrough with the titles "I Can't Sleep" and "You Remind Me", two productions that appeared on R. Kelly's album R. Kelly (1995). Collaborations with the singer Pebbles and the pop group 98 Degrees soon followed .

Two years later, in 1997, Winans released his debut album, Story of My Heart, on Motown Records . Although the first and only single "Don't Know" reached the top 50 of the American R&B charts, the album flopped. A short time later, Mario joined Diddy 's Bad Boy Records , for whose artists (including The Notorious BIG , Lil 'Kim , Faith Evans , Loon , 112 ) he has co-produced over the years. Winan's greatest successes from this time include both the remix compilation We Invented The Remix (2002) and the single releases "I Need a Girl (Part I)" and "(Part II)".

At the same time, Winans worked regularly on his second album Hurt No More until 2003 . The record's first single, "I Don't Wanna Know" with a sample from Enyas Boadicea , was released in early 2004 and developed into a world hit within a few weeks. It reached number 1 in the singles charts in the United States as well as in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the wake of its success, Hurt No More , released in April 2004, reached number 2 on the US Billboard album charts and number 3 in Great Britain.

In the following years, Winans made more and more attention as a producer of artists such as Mary J. Blige , Beyoncé , Whitney Houston , Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez . In 2009 Winans was featured on the Massiv album with the song "Dream". In 2012 he released a new song with Kay One called I Need a Girl (Part III) .
