Pebbles (singer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pebbles (* 29. August 1964 in Oakland , California , as Perri Arnette McKissack ) is an American Pop - Soul - and R & B - singer , but also music manager .

biography

The cousin of the R & B singer Cherrelle began her music career in the early 1980s as a background singer of Jazz Funk - percussionist Bill Summers (Album Call It What You Want ) and the Soul Funk - Disco band Con Funk Shun . She also co-wrote the 1981 Con-Funk-Shun single Body Lovers .

In 1987 McKissack began a solo career as Pebbles and signed a contract with MCA Records . The stage name gave her the family, who felt reminded of Pebbles Flintstone by their style . The debut album , also called Pebbles , was released in the fall of 1987. It features ten songs by songwriters such as Babyface , Michael Sembello and his brother Danny, and LA Reid , her future husband. The tracks Girlfriend (1987) and Mercedes Boy (1988) contained on the record reached the top 5 of the US charts , the album climbed to number 14 on the charts and went platinum .

The follow-up album Always also became a success in the fall of 1990 and received a gold record in the United States . The first single, Giving You the Benefit , released in the summer of 1990, is the last Pebbles song to make it into the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Love Makes Things Happen was still in the top 20 at the end of the year. Backyard , a feature with Salt 'n' Pepa , was only in the lower chart area in spring 1991.

During a break of several years in her singing career that followed, Pebbles founded her own label, Savvy Records. In 1991, in Atlanta , Georgia , she was involved in initiating the R&B and hip-hop trio TLC , of which she became the manager. The band was one of the most successful pop groups of the 1990s and had nine top 10 hits in the USA between 1992 and 1999, four of which reached the top spot.

After that, Pebbles returned to their original calling and released their third album Straight from My Heart in late summer 1995 . Despite the participation of songwriters and producers such as Sean Combs , Kyle West, Tony Rich and Organized Noize , the long player could not build on previous successes, became a flop and thus remains the last studio album as Pebbles to this day. In the 2000s, only two compilations with their greatest hits appeared under this pseudonym .

After divorcing LA Reid in 1996, the musician joined the born again Christians and founded the Women of God Changing Lives Ministry . The gospel album Prophetic Flows Vol. I & II was released in 2008 under the name Sister Perri .
