Cherrelle (* 13. October 1958 in Los Angeles , California , USA as Cheryl Anne Norton ) is an American R & B - singer . She celebrated her greatest successes in the 1980s with the producer duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis . Between 1984 and 1999 it placed a total of 13 hits in the American R&B charts. Her most successful songs were I Didn't Mean to Turn You on , Everything I Miss at Home and her duets with R&B singer Alexander O'Neal , Saturday Love and Never Knew Love Like This .

Career

Cherrelle, who chose her stage name after her former boss called her that, began her career with R&B and jazz artists Norman Connors and Michael Henderson and as a backing singer with Luther Vandross . After Tabu Records founder Clarence Avant heard a demo recording by Cherrelle, she got a record deal with this record label in 1983.

In 1984 Cherrelle released her debut album Fragile , which was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis . The album contained the American R&B top ten single I Didn't Mean to Turn You on . The video for this song was a tribute to King Kong . Cherrelle played the woman King Kong falls in love with. This song was covered by pop singer Robert Palmer on his 1985 album Riptide . The song was also covered by Mariah Carey on her soundtrack album Glitter in 2001 using the original instrumental tracks.

Cherrelle's follow-up album, High Priority , received gold status and contained the American Top 40 hit (# 2 Billboard R&B) Saturday Love , a duet with Alexander O'Neal . In the UK, this song rose to number 6 in the charts. The song Never knew Love Like This , also a duet with Alexander O'Neal, rose to number 28 in the Billboard Pop Charts and to number 2 in the American R&B charts.

In 1988 the album Affair was released. This contained the US R&B Top 1 hit Everything I Miss at Home . The album's title track also became a hit with the top spot at # 4 on the Billboard R&B charts.

Cherrelle's cousin is R&B pop singer Perri "Pebbles" Reid . Cherrelle played with Johnny Gill ( New Edition ) in 1991 on Pebble's single Always , which climbed to the top 20 on the Billboard R&B charts. In the same year Cherrelle released the album The Woman I am . This was the first album that was not produced and written by producers Jam and Lewis. She worked on this album with producer Narada Michael Walden .

In 1999 Cherrelle released her last album so far The Right Time on the independent label Power. On this album played the rapper Keith Murray as a guest musician .

In 2011, American television station TV One presented an episode with Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal in the Unsung series , which is dedicated to R&B stars who received less attention than others.

In the same year both appeared together with their hits at the BET Awards .
