The ornamental parrots ( Pionopsitta ) are a genus from the family of the real parrots (Psittacidae). Within the form-rich New World parrots , they are closely related to the white-bellied parrots and the red- bellied parrots . The ornamental parrots are a genus of small parrots that reach an average body length of 22 centimeters. Characteristic are the wide, tapering wings, the rounded and relatively short tail, the partially feathered reins, the bulbous beak and the featherless dark circles.

The genus includes eight species with several subspecies. While seven of these form a fairly homogeneous group, the scarlet head parrot stands out in several features. It has a longer, narrower tail, a less bulbous beak, and narrower wings. In addition, in contrast to the rest, the species has a sexual dimorphism with regard to some plumage characteristics.

The ornamental parrots are widespread in South America , there in Brazil , Colombia , Argentina and Peru . They inhabit forests and forest edge areas of tropical and subtropical zones as well as mountainous areas up to heights of 1500 meters.
