The scarlet head parrot reaches a body length of 22 cm. The males have a green basic plumage. The feathers in the throat region are tinted slightly blue. The feathers on the crown of the head, forehead and reins are orange-red, the ear spots are brownish. The plumage on the neck is lined with olive green. The wings have violet-blue feathers on the edge and on the palm. The under wing cover and the outer flags of the wings are blue-green. The feathers on the thighs and the under tail cover are yellow-green. The feathers on the upper tail cover are green and have blue borders. The feathers on the underside of the tail are a dull blue-green. The beak of these parrots is gray-green and becomes horn-colored towards the tip. The iris is dark brown with unfeathered brownish circles under the eyes. The feet are gray. The females are similar to the males, but they do not have orange-red feathers on the crown, forehead, and reins. Her feathers are green in these places and her forehead is bluish.

The young birds look similar to the adult birds. Young males are already recognizable in the nest and are characterized by their red forehead feathers.

Occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the scarlet head parrots extends from southeastern Brazil to northeastern Argentina . Here they inhabit the forests of tropical and subtropical zones. On the coasts of Eastern Brazil you can still find them at an altitude of 1500 meters.

Way of life

The scarlet-headed parrot is not only an inhabitant of the rainforests, it is also found in the lowland areas of Paraguay and Argentina. The parrots live in pairs or small groups that rest on the tree tops during the day. They move gently between the branches in search of food. They are fast and direct fliers.
