White-bellied parrots ( Pionites ) are a genus of New World parrots that includes two recent species. Both species of this genus occur exclusively in the Amazon basin . They are listed in Appendix II of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species and are therefore in need of protection.
Appearance
The two species of the genus Pionites are medium-sized, have a short angular tail and a relatively small beak. The creamy white colored breast plumage is characteristic of both species, which distinguishes them from the other parrot species and which gave the genus its name. There is no gender dimorphism in either form. What also distinguishes the genus Pionites from other parrots is their upright posture.
