The rust cap parrot ( Pionites leucogaster ) is a parrots art from the genus of caique .
Appearance
The rust-capped parrot reaches a total length of 23 centimeters. The plumage is orange on the crown, nape and ear-covers. The reins, throat and sides of the head are yellow. The plumage is green on the back, wings and thighs as well as the sides of the body and the upper tail cover. The under wing coverts are also green. The under tail cover is colored yellow. The feathers on the chest and stomach are creamy white. The hand covers and wings are blue-violet and have a green border. The beak is horn-colored and the feet pink. The iris of the rust-capped parrots is red.
Young birds look similar to adult birds, but they have a brownish vertex and neck, which is interspersed with isolated black feathers. The upper beak has a gray mark on the base. The feet are gray and the iris is brown in color.
Way of life
The rust-capped parrot inhabits tropical rainforests and forest edges . He seems to prefer trees near water. In family groups, in pairs or in small flocks, the rust-capped parrot searches for food. When the birds are in search of food in the dense branches, they can be spotted by their piercing vocalizations.
population
The size of the rust-capped parrot population is stable in most parts of the range. In parts of Brazil, the population has decreased slightly due to the ongoing deforestation there. In Peru and Brazil, the parrots live protected in national parks and nature reserves .

In addition to the nominate form , the green-legged rust-capped parrot ( Pionites leucogaster leucogaster ) new name Ostampelparrot, two other subspecies are known:
- Yellow-thigh rust-cap parrot new name Westampelparagei ( Pionites leucogaster xanthomerius )
- Yellow-tailed rust-cap parrot new name Blassampelparroti ( Pionites leucogaster xanthurus )
