The violet parrot ( Pionus fuscus ), a real New World parrot , belongs to the genus of the red-tipped parrots ( Pionus ).

features

The violet parrot reaches a size of 26 cm. The plumage on the head is pale blue, with red spots on both forehead sides and black feathers over the ears. The feathers on the throat and neck form cream-white hems. The feathers on the chin are dull pink. The back plumage of the parrots is dark brown with pale borders, the feathers on the belly are brown with red-blue or purple borders. The tail feathers are dark blue on the top and dull red on the underside. The insides of the wings have a deep purple-blue tone, the top of the wings is purple-blue. The upper beak has a yellow spot, the rest of the beak is dark gray. The parrot's iris is brown. The feet are gray.

The young birds of the violet parrots look like the adults, except for a greenish border on the feathers.

distribution

The distribution area of ​​the violet parrots extends from southeastern Venezuela to northeastern Brazil . The parrots inhabit both sides of the Amazon in this area , up to the Rio Negro and the lower Rio Madeira . There is also an isolated population in the extreme north-east of Colombia .

Way of life

The violet parrot lives in the tropical rainforests and forest edges, avoiding open grasslands. It shares its habitat with the black-eared parrot (Pionus menstruus). The population in Colombia has been sighted at an altitude of 1200 m. Otherwise the type prefers flat land areas below 600 m.

threat

The population size of the violet parrots is largely stable. Only in Brazil has a population decline been registered due to deforestation. Areas in Suriname and Venezuela where the violet parrot is found have been placed under protection.
