Live and act

Statius Müller (pseudonym: Philipp Alethophilus) was born as the son of the preacher Christoph Anton Statius Müller and studied theology and philosophy in Jena from 1741 to 1744 . The physician August Leberecht Müller , who worked in Curacao , was his brother. Statius Müller became a preacher of the Lutheran congregation in Amersfoort on October 30, 1745 . In 1749 he followed a call to Leeuwarden . Due to accusations that he sympathized with Balthasar Bekker and represented too much theological views committed to the Enlightenment, there was a break with the church by 1754. Statius Müller accepted a position at the University of Erlangen , where he gave lectures on logic , metaphysics , rhetoric , politics , the Dutch language , economics ( cameralistics ) and natural sciences such as botany, herbal medicine and geography. His continued contacts in the Netherlands made it possible to set up a natural history cabinet. In 1766 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Between 1773 and 1776 Müller published a German-language classification of the animal kingdom. He was guided by both the first volume of the twelfth edition of Carl von Linné's Systema Naturae and Maarten Houttuyn's Natuurlijke Historie . The addendum from 1776 contained initial descriptions for a large number of animal species, including guanaco , potto , dugong , blue- masked parrot , hoatzin and red-tailed cockatoo .
