The blue-masked parrot , also known as the blue-headed parrot ( Amazona versicolor ), is a parrot species from the subfamily of the New World parrots , which is one of the most endangered Amazon species.

features

The basic color of the plumage of this 43 centimeter Amazon species is green. The blue head feathering gives it its name: both the forehead, the forehead and the reins are violet-blue in color. The region around the eyes, the ears and the cheeks, on the other hand, are blue to blue-green feathered. On the other hand, a red band is deposited on the throat, the chest and belly are green-yellow with isolated wine-red feathers.

Blue masked amazons are restricted to the island of St. Lucia , a small island in the Lesser Antilles . Their habitat are primary primeval forests in the mountains of St. Lucia, which have now shrunk to an area of ​​65 to 70 square kilometers due to clearing.

Danger

In 1975 the population of the blue masked amazon was only 125 to 175 animals. Due to a strict protection status, the number of animals rose again to around 300 by the beginning of the 1990s. However, due to its small distribution area, this species is at risk of being destroyed by an outbreak of disease or a natural disaster.
