description

The basic color of the plumage of this 40 to 41 centimeter large and overall very colorful species is golden brown, olive brown, red brown or green, depending on the color morph. This distinguishes them from the other species in the genus. Regardless of the respective color morph, the forehead and parting are white. The back of the head and the throat and sides of the neck are orange. The cheeks and the ear covers are purple blue. The tail feathers are orange at the base, violet towards the center and show a dark yellow, almost orange, at the end.

The king amazon originally lived in all of St. Vincent's mountain rainforests. As for many other animal species, extensive habitat destruction initially restricted the habitat of the king amazon. Two natural disasters, namely the hurricane "David" and the eruption of the Soufrière volcano in 1979 then ensured that the species is now distributed over several small forest islands. After a low of around 400 animals, the population has risen again. A protection of the remaining habitats and an awareness campaign among the population of St. Vincent about the parrot, which has been declared a national bird, have contributed significantly to this.
