Hans von Berlepsch

Hans Hermann Carl Ludwig von Berlepsch , from 1869 with the elevation of his father's rank (born July 29, 1850 at Gut Fahrenbach near Witzenhausen ; † February 27, 1915 in Göttingen ), was a German ornithologist .

Origin and education

Berlepsch was the elder son of the baron, from 1869 Count Karl Friedrich von Berlepsch (1821-1893), master of Berlepsch Castle and the Fahrbach , Dohrenbach , Freudenthal , Hübenthal and Neuenrode estates and a member of the Prussian manor and his wife Johanna Margarete Theodore Koch (1829–1902), daughter of the former Hessian Minister of the Interior, Johann Hermann Koch .

Even as a boy he showed a pronounced preference for the natural sciences. From his father he learned the stuffing in the hunt hunted birds, and he went to a small collection gebalgter birds native fauna on. He had to interrupt his high school in Münden in 1870 as a primary school student because he had to join Hussar Regiment No. 14 at the beginning of the Franco-German War . He was promoted to lieutenant , but he later described his soldier days as a terrible one. After the end of his time as a soldier, he finished his school education with the Abitur and then studied ornithology and botany in Leipzig , Halle and Zurich .

Life

After a longer stay in London made possible by his father , he returned, married Emma von Bülow (1855–1937) in 1881 and moved into a small house with his wife in Münden, where he - a passionate hiker and hunter - devoted himself primarily to expanding his bird collection which was based largely on submissions from bird collectors from South America such as Hermann von Ihering . The steadily growing collection and his equally growing ornithological library devoured a lot of money and brought nothing, so that his parents had to help out again and again. As the house soon became too small, the family moved to a spacious new building in the neighborhood, where researchers from many countries and museums frequented.

Palmsteiger ( Berlepschia rikeri ) ( Ridgway , 1887), the only species of this genus.

When his father died in 1893 and he took over his inheritance, he had to take care of the administration of Berlepsch Castle, which had been extensively rebuilt since 1881, and the associated agricultural and forestry property, which involved frequent trips back and forth between Münden and the Berlepsch Castle required. Repairs and alterations were still necessary on the castle to make it habitable again. The von Münden family was only able to move into the castle in 1896. The extensive bird collection was housed in the fruit house that was converted into a museum.

The administration of the property as well as several offices in district committees and with the provincial government in Kassel put a strain on the health of Berlepsch, who increasingly suffered from diabetes in old age, and the scientific work of necessity faded somewhat into the background.

When he died on February 27, 1915, his bellows collection, which had attracted ornithologists from around the world, comprised almost 60,000 copies, including 300 new types. It was sold by his son Karl to the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt am Main , where it survived the destruction of World War II .

Honors

The Berlepschparadiesvogel , the Berlepschelfe , the Berlepschsylphe and the Berlepschtinamu were named after Hans von Berlepsch .
