Gustav Mützel
Gustav Ludwig Heinrich Mützel (born December 7, 1839 in Berlin ; † October 29, 1893 there ) was a German animal painter . He became known for his animal pictures, especially for his illustrations in the second edition of Brehm's Animal Life .
Life
Gustav Mützel was the son of the painter Heinrich Mützel and his wife Luise Pauline Friedrichs. He attended the French high school in his hometown. Subsequently, Mützel began to study at the art academy at the age of 18 and became a student of the painter Eduard Daege .
On November 1, 1865, Mützel married Anna Schönherr in Berlin and had three children with her; Hans , Walter and Gertrud. Mützel and his wife settled down as a photographer in Königsberg in Neumark . In order to better satisfy his interest in the latest technical achievements in his art direction, Mützel and his family moved to Berlin in 1870.
After the Franco-Prussian War , Mützel achieved his artistic breakthrough as an illustrator of the most important conversation encyclopedias of his time. In addition, he also created a large number of drawings and illustrations; among others for the German Ornithological Society , of which Mützel had been a member since 1874. Mützel's diverse interests also led to membership of the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory and the Association of Berlin Artists . The Nießen'sche Choral Society honored Mützel with an honorary membership.
At the age of 54, Gustav Mützel died in his apartment (Berlin SW, Hagelsberger Str. 10) on October 29, 1893 of a heart and kidney disease. He found his final resting place on November 1st in the cemetery in Berlin-Mariendorf .
