Theodor Pleske

Theodor Pleske (Theodore Pleske, actually Fyodor Dmitrievich Pleske, Russian Фёдор Дмитриевич Плеске , scientific. Transliteration : Fedor Dmitrievič Pleske * 11. July 1858 in Peterhof , † 1. August 1932 in Leningrad ) was a Russian zoologist German descent, which mainly in the fields of entomology , ornithology and mammalogy . In his honor the Pleskehay ( Podoces pleskei ), the Pleskeschwirl ( Locustella pleskei ) and a subspecies of the Ptarmigan ( Lagopus muta pleskei ) were named.

Life

Pleske came from a wealthy merchant family from Silesia , who initially settled in Riga for two generations and later in St. Petersburg. The father Eduard Ludwig Pleske (1817–1873) was a Russian major general . After studying natural sciences at the University of Saint Petersburg , Pleske worked at the Academy's Zoological Museum from 1882 and rose to the position of Deputy Director and also to the rank of Real Councilor of State until 1892. Due to his unwanted membership in an allegedly German party, he had to resign at the request of the superior director in 1896 and then worked successfully in the commercial field for some time. He also conducted studies on two-winged aircraft . In the course of the social unrest at the end of the 19th century, he resumed his museum work and took over the management of the entomological department. Research trips took him to the Kola Peninsula in 1880 and to eastern Siberia from 1883–1884 . He was active in the research areas of Eurasian avifauna and mammalogy and scientifically evaluated the extensive collections of Nikolai Michailowitsch Prschewalski and Grigori Jefimowitsch Grum-Grschimailos .
