Distribution map of the Berlepschtinamu.

The Berlepschtinamu ( Crypturellus berlepschi ) is a scarcely researched species of bird from the cocoon family . It occurs in the rainforests of northwest Colombia and northwest Ecuador .

features

The Berlepschtinamu is a medium-sized Tinamu and reaches sizes of 29.6–32 cm. The males reach a weight of 430–537 g and the females 512–615 g. The fletching shows occasional variations; in general, however, the color is black-brown to deep dark brown. The head and throat are usually darker than the rest of the body with a reddish tinge on the crown and neck. The legs and feet are flesh colored and the beak is dark on the top and also flesh colored on the underside. The beak is longer and stronger than that of the Grautinamu. The iris is red.

The juvenile specimens are colored the same as the adult animals, but they have a sparrow mark on the belly and on the wings, as well as cinnamon-colored wing edges

distribution

The Berlepschtinamu occurs from the extreme north coast of Ecuador north to the coast of Colombia , to the Parque Nacional Natural Utría ( Bahia de Capica ). It lives in the subtropical and tropical lowland rainforests and prefers fully grown secondary forests . In Colombia it occurs up to a height of 500  m , occasionally specimens were found up to a height of 900  m .

In Ecuador, the species has been detected by only two sightings: Once in the reserve Playa de oro reserva de los tigrillos , about 20 km north of Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve and in the Milipe Bird Sanctuary about 15 km west of Maquipucuna .

behavior

Little is known about the behavior. It is assumed that the Berlepschtinamu is a resident bird. As with other representatives of the genus, it is assumed that the birds feed on fleshy fruits, insects, and plants.

In Colombia, the breeding season begins in February. The males incubate the eggs, which can come from up to four different females, and lead the chicks for about 2-3 weeks. The nests are made on the ground in dense vegetation.

Systematics

Berlepsch's Tinamou is a species from the Tinamidae family and belongs to the Glatt Taos genus . Until the middle of the 20th century, the species was considered a subspecies of the Grautinamu ( C. cinereus ), but was classified as a separate species due to its beak size , the ratio of the length of the toes to the foot and differences in fletching.

The species name berlepschi honors the German ornithologist and collector Hans von Berlepsch .

protection

The IUCN classifies the species as Least Concern. The distribution area extends over an area of 60,000 km².
