Władysław (Ladislaus) Taczanowski

Władysław Taczanowski (German: Ladislaus Taczanowski , French: Ladislas Taczanowski ) (born March 1, 1819 in Jabłonna near Lublin ; † January 17, 1890 in Warsaw ) was a Polish zoologist .

In his youth, Taczanowski attended high school in Lubin , which he graduated in 1838. The difficult political times prevented him from entering a university and so he had to take the initiative to acquire his scientific knowledge. He learned to hunt on the estate of his father Kazimierz Taczanowski (1789–1839). After his death, he managed his father's estate between 1839 and 1859 before finally selling it. In 1859 the ruler of Radom hired him in the public service with the aim of creating an animal collection for the Lubin and Random districts. Other counties were to follow, but this idea was rejected again. During this time he wandered all over the area of ​​what was then Congress Poland to study the domestic avifauna . He spent all of his fortune to complete his collection. After assembling and organizing his collection, he bequeathed it to the Natural History Museum of the Royal Warsaw University . In 1855 he became the museum's curator , a position he held until his death.

In 1857 Józef Mianowski sent him to Paris to study the collections there. Here he learned the craft of taxidermy and so he soon had an important ornithological and zoological collection. When in 1862, after the death of Konstantin Tyzenhaus, 170 of his tables with Polish bird eggs were published, it was Taczanowski who provided the text for the tables.

Between 1866 and 1867 he traveled with Count Konstanty (1824–1884) and Aleksander Branicki (1821–1877) to Algeria , from where he brought a rich collection of natural history exhibits back to the museum. Very soon after his return he received another collection that his childhood friends Benedykt Dybowski and Wiktor Witold Godlewski (1831–1900) had brought from Siberia , an area where they were deported as politically convicted. Funded by Count Konstanty Branicki, Konstanty Roman Jelski (1837–1896) and Jan Sztolcman (1854–1928) collected in Cayenne , Ecuador and Peru and supplied Taczanowski with new material that he worked on scientifically. Jelski had already settled in Cayenne in 1866 and moved to Peru in 1871 at Branicki's instigation. Sztolcman did not follow him until 1875 and stayed in Peru until 1882. Because of the saltpeter war with Chile, he left the country and therefore traveled through Ecuador from 1883 to 1885. Further donations for the museum and its library came from patrons such as Jerzy Wandalin Mniszech (1824–1881) and Władysław Jan Emanuel Lubomirski (1824–1881).

The collections enabled Taczanowski to work scientifically and so he wrote important works on the ornithological fauna of Poland, Siberia and Peru. His preferred field of research was certainly ornithology , but he also published other important works, e.g. B. About arachnids. His publications appeared in Polish, Russian, French and German. Most of the German articles appeared in the Journal für Ornithologie . "A critical review of the ornithological fauna of Eastern Siberia (Критический обзор орнитологической фауны Восточной Сибири)" appeared in Russian in several articles in Bulletin de la Société de France . With Ptaki krajowe he published a two-volume work on the birds of his homeland in his mother tongue. His most important work was certainly his four-volume Ornithologie du Pérou , which was published between 1884 and 1886. In 1889 he was awarded the University of Krakow the honorary doctorate for his services around the science.

Dedication names

Eugen von Keyserling (1832-1889) dedicated the spider genus Taczanowskia to him in 1879 , which he introduced for the species Taczanowskia striata . With Mughiphantes taczanowskii , Octavius ​​Pickard-Cambridge named another species of spider after him in 1873. Oldfield Thomas dedicated a species belonging to the Paramo mice to him in 1882 under the name Thomasomys taczanowskii . Jan Sztolcman (1854-1928) dedicated to him in 1926 also the generic name Taczanowskia he for Rußkleintyrann ( Serpophaga nigricans ) Vieillot introduced, 1817). However, according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature, this name must be regarded today as a synonym for Serpophaga Gould , 1839. He had already described the mountain paka ( Cuniculus taczanowskii ) in 1885 . Robert Swinhoe (1836–1877) honored him in 1871 on behalf of the Taczanowskibuschsänger ( Locustella tacsanowskia ). In 1892, Hans Hermann Carl Ludwig von Berlepsch and Sztolcman named the Nördliche Felsuferwipper ( Cinclodes taczanowskii ) and in 1894 the Puna diver ( Podiceps taczanowskii ), and in the same year a subspecies of the White Stripe Elcanastero ( Asthenes flammulata taczanowskii ). In 1879 Philip Lutley Sclater named the Taczanowsk hummingbird ( Leucippus taczanowskii ) and in 1886 a subspecies of the purple throat organist ( Euphonia chlorotica taczanowskii ) in his honor. In 1875, together with Osbert Salvin , he had first described the Taczanowski's cockerel ( Nothoprocta taczanowskii ). The illustration for this was provided by Joseph Smit (1836–1929). Carl Eduard Hellmayr called 1917 gray face-Laubtyrann ( Leptopogon taczanowskii ) because Taczanowski this previously under the name Leptopogon rufipectus published and this already through the grate breast Laubtyrann (( Leptopogon rufipectus ( Lafresnaye was awarded), 1846). Thalurania furcata taczanowskii Dunajewski , 1938 is now regarded as a synonym for a subspecies of Schwalbe nnymphe ( Thalurania furcata jelskii Taczanowski , 1874), Micro Palma Tacksanowskia Verreaux , 1860, when a synonym for the steppe sludge rotor ( Limnodromus semipalmatus ) ( Blyth , 1848), Columba taczanowskii Stejneger as a synonym for the clip pigeon ( Columba rupestris Pallas , 1811) and Garrulus glandarius taczanowskii Lönnberg , 1908 as a synonym for a subspecies of the jay ( Garrulus glandarius brandtii Eversmann , 1842). In 1869 Benedykt Dybowski described a species of fish that belongs to the gudgeon relatives under the name Ladislavia taczanowskii . Both the new genus name and the species name are dedicated to Taczanowski. In English the fish is called Taczanowski's Gudgeon . With the type of cancer Hyalellopsis taczanowskii followed in 1874 another homage by Dybowski. The snake species Tropidophis taczanowskyi was described by Franz Steindachner in 1880.
