Subspecies
The species is considered to be monotypical . The subspecies Thaumasius taczanowskii fractus , described by Outram Bangs and Gladwyn Kingsley Noble , is now considered a synonym for the nominate form .
Etymology and history of research
Philip Lutley Sclater described the Taczanowsky hummingbird under the name Thaumasius taczanowskii . The type specimen came from Guajango in the province of Cajamarca and was collected there by Jan Sztolcman and Konstanty Roman Jelski (1837-1896). Władysław Taczanowski sent Sclater the brat for analysis. In 1850 Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte introduced the genus Leucippus a . a. for the cinnamon breast hummingbird. The generic name refers to " Leukippos Λεύκιππος " from Greek mythology . The species name dedicated Sclater Taczanowski. Fractus is the Latin word for weakened, broken .
