Outram bangs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Outram Bangs (born January 12, 1863 in Watertown , Massachusetts , † September 22, 1932 in East Wareham , Massachusetts) was an American zoologist .

Live and act

Outram Bangs spent the year 1873 with his family in England . From 1880 to 1884 he studied at Harvard University . In 1890 he began a systematic study of animals in eastern North America. He wrote over 70 books and articles, 55 of them on mammals alone. His collection contained more than 10,000 mammalian specimens and skulls of over a hundred different species. He handed this over to Harvard College in 1899. Bangs was appointed assistant mammals at Harvard and eventually became curator of mammals at the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology (then the Museum of Comparative Zoology) in 1900 . In addition to the mammals, his other passion was birds. In 1906 he collected over 100 birds in Jamaica, an expedition that had to be canceled due to an illness with dengue fever . In 1908 he also gave his approx. 24,000 bird specimens to the Museum of Comparative Zoology. In 1925 he traveled to Europe to visit natural history museums and ornithologists and to maintain a scientific exchange of views.

Dedication names

Thomas Edward Penard (1878-1936) dedicated the genus Bangsia to Bangs . Joel Asaph Allen (1838–1921) paid his respects to him in 1900 with the specific epithet for the Cundinamarca ant pitta ( Grallaria bangsi ) .

In addition, many bird subspecies include Bang's name in the scientific name. The name is found in the subspecies of the black-throated bunting Amphispiza bilineata bangsi Grinnell , 1927, the mangrove buzzard ( Buteogallus subtilis bangsi ) ( Swann , 1922), the cuckoo Cuculus canorus bangsi Oberholser , 1919, the Feuerliests Halcyon coromanda bangsi ( Oberholser , 1915), the blue ring dove Leptotila verreauxi Bangsi Dickey & Van Rossem , 1926, the Goldbandpipra manacus manacus Bangsi Chapman , 1914, the Yellow-breasted Crake Porzana flaviventer Bangsi Darlington , 1931, the Greater Antillean Grackle Quiscalus niger Bangsi ( JL Peters , 1921), the Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii Bangsi Mathews , 1912, the Least grebe Tachybaptus dominicus Bangsi ( van Rossem & Hachisuka , 1937), the Grüntangare Tangara gyrola Bangsi ( Hellmayr , 1911), the gold-billed muse throttle ( Catharus aurantiirostris Bangsi ) Dickey & van Rossem , 1925, the Chinakleibers ( Sitta villosa Bangsi ) Stresemann , 1929 and the olive-back tree climber Xiphorhynchus triangularis bangsi Chapman , 1919 .

Bang's name can also be found in the subspecies of the arctic hare Lepus arcticus bangsii Rhoads , 1896, the short-tailed weasel Mustela erminea bangsi Hall , 1945, and the red fox Vulpes vulpes bangsi Merriam , 1900.

The subspecies rust-winged bunting ( Peucaea carpalis bangsi ) ( Moore , 1932) and Madeira wave runner ( Oceanodroma castro bangsi ) Nichols , 1914, are invalid taxa.

In English you can find the common name Bang's Hummingbird for a hybrid of cinnamon belly ( Amazilia rutila ) and brown- tailed amazily ( Amazilia tzacatl ). In 1910 Robert Ridgway (1850–1929) had described the type specimen of the hybrid that Bangs had collected for the first time. In addition, Bangs's Sparrow for Amphispiza bilineata bangsi and Bangs's Black Parrot for Coracopsis nigra libs found their way into the English-language literature . With Bangs's Mountain Squirrel for Syntheosciurus brochus , which he was the first to describe in 1902, his name can also be found in a trivial name for mammals.
