The Caucaguan ( Penelope perspicax ) is a chicken bird from the family of the Hokkohühner (Cracidae).

The Latin additional species refers to the Valle del Cauca region .

The bird is endemic to Colombia and occurs in the middle and upper valley of the Río Cauca (Valle del Cauca) on the western and central Andes .

The distribution area includes subtropical dry to moist forest mostly between 900 and 2150 m altitude.

The species is monotypical . It was a long time as being related to the Spix's Guan ( Penelope jacquacu ) or Rostbauchguan ( Penelope purpurascens viewed) and forms with the latter and with the Weißschwingenguan ( Penelope albipennis ) and the Bronzeguan ( Penelope obscura ) a species circle .

features

The bird is about 76 cm long and weighs about 1197 g. The plumage is mainly reddish brown, especially on the wing covers and tail, with strong white markings on the neck and chest. The outer tail feathers are darker than the inner ones. The head is darker than the chest in contrast to the Andenguan ( Penelope montagnii ). The red dewlap is smaller than that of the rust-bellied guuan ( Penelope purpurascens ). There is no difference between the sexes . Even young birds do not differ from adults in terms of plumage.

voice

The call of the male is given as with other Hokkohenner as loud repeated "chiriwichi, chiriwichi, chiriwichi ..." mostly in the morning and mainly from February to June. The alarm call is described as "quan quan".

Way of life

The species usually occurs in pairs or small groups.

The breeding season is between September and October and between February and March. The nest is made on a tree. The clutch consists of two white eggs that are hatched by the female.

The diet consists of fruits that are commonly sought groups.

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered endangered due to habitat loss . The species is also hunted.
