The rust-bellied guuan ( Penelope purpurascens ) is a fowl from the family of the Hokkohühner (Cracidae).
The Latin species addition means purple.
The bird is resident from southern Mexico to the extreme northwest of Peru and to northern Venezuela .
The distribution area includes tree-lined habitats of all kinds, preferably in the lowlands , ranging from sea level to 2000 or 2500 m altitude.
features
The bird is the size of a turkey , 76 to 91 cm long and weighs around 2 kg. There is no difference between the sexes . The body is relatively small in relation to the long wings and tail. The plumage is predominantly dark olive-brown with a light greenish or purple shimmer, on the chest with white edges. There are individual bristles on the throat, the dewlap is dark red. The feathers are usually erected. The iris is red, the beak blackish. In young birds, the colors are even paler and mottled with black-brown.

The call of the male is described aloud as with other Hokko chickens as repeated "yoink yoink ..." or "kyeh-kyeh-keyh ...".
Way of life
The species occurs mostly in pairs or small groups, almost always on trees, only rarely on the ground.
The breeding season in Costa Rica is between March and June. The clutch usually consists of two gray-white eggs that are hatched over 26 days.
nutrition
The diet consists of fresh fruits , which are usually sought in groups high in the treetops.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- P. p. purpurascens Wagler , 1830, nominate form , - Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua
- P. p. aequatorialis Salvadori & E. Festa , 1900 - South Honduras and Nicaragua to West Colombia and Southwest Ecuador
- P. p. brunnescens Hellmayr & Conover , 1932 - Northern Colombia to Eastern Venezuela
Hazardous situation
The population is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ), but it is threatened by habitat loss and hunting pressure.
