Arthur Loveridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arthur Loveridge (born May 28, 1891 in Penarth , Wales , † February 16, 1980 on St. Helena ) was a British biologist and herpetologist . He described the animal world in East Africa and published a large number of new descriptions, including of reptiles.

Life

He has been interested in natural history since childhood. After leaving school, he did an apprenticeship as a businessman in a family environment for two years. He then attended a one-year course with William Newton Parker (1857-1923) at the University College of South Wales . This was followed by a six-month position as an assistant at the Manchester Museum . Here he cataloged, refilled exhibits or re-identified them. In 1911 an assistant position at the National Museum of Wales followed . Here he organized temporary exhibitions and created a 23000 index consisting of cards, with corresponding collector's items. In 1914 Loveridge became a curator at the newly founded British East Africa Museum in Nairobi , Kenya (today: part of the National Museums of Kenya ). Despite his young age, he proudly mentioned in his application that he owned over 300 containers with natural history and anthropological exhibits, as well as over 250 jars with formalin and alcohol in which he kept reptiles. He also stated that he mastered preparation techniques and described his complex system in an 80-page catalog.

During World War I , Loveridge served for three years with the East Africa Rifles in Tanganyika . After completing his service, he was stationed in Lumbo in Mozambique . After the war he worked as an assistant game warden in Tanganyika for several years. During this task he collected many natural history specimens. Between 1920 and 1925, he published numerous scientific articles on reptiles and amphibians in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London .

In 1924 he went to the USA and was under the direction of Thomas Barbour employee at the herpetological section of Harvard University . In 1927 he became a curator at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ). In five expeditions to East Africa he collected for the MCZ, preferably in evergreen forests, such as B. in the years 1926 to 1927 in the mountains of Uluguru and Usambara , in the years 1929 to 1930 in the southwestern plateaus of Tanganyika, in the years 1933 to 1934 in Kenya and eastern Uganda , in the years 1938 to 1939 in Kenya , Tanzania and Uganda, and in 1948 and 1949 in Malawi and the province of Tete . Reports on these expeditions appeared in Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard College . He first described 70 species of reptiles.

Between 1936 and 1958 he carried out taxonomic treatment of many African genera and families . So he started with the genus Cnemaspis up to various species of adder . Unfortunately, since many of his studies took place during World War II , he did not have access to specimens from some European and African museums. Another important publication shortly before his retirement was Checklist of the reptiles and amphibians of East Africa in 1957 . Between 1913 and 1962, around 180 herpetological papers by Loveridge were published.

In June 1957 he left the MCS and spent his retirement in St. Helena. Nevertheless, he continued to communicate with numerous scientists. He inspired many of his students with some popular scientific publications such as Many Happy Days I've Squandered or I Drank the Zambezi . In 1929 he married Mary Victoria Sloane in Mombasa , who died in June 1972. The marriage produced a son named Brian. He died on February 16, 1980 in the hospital on St. Helena.

Dedication names

The following reptile species were named after him:

Ernst Hartert dedicated the scientific name of the orange-bellied nectar bird ( Cinnyris loveridgei ) to him in 1922 , the man who collected the type specimen . The common name Loveridge's Sunbird therefore also exists in English . Hartert wrote:

"In the Tring Museum, 24th BC. 1921, collected by Arthur Loveridge, after whom the species is named. "
