The Meysel singers led by Emil Meysel

Emil Meysel (born June 23, 1876 in Döbeln ; † March 29, 1960 ) was a German folk singer and humorist in Leipzig .

Life

Meysel moved to Leipzig with his parents at the end of 1876. He learned the profession of engraver , but later he had to work as a press gilder because of an eye defect . From 1894 he appeared as a club humorist and in 1906 with the Leipzig Carola singers. From August 1, 1907, he was director of his own company, the "Meysel Singers" in Leipzig, as well as a humorist with a repertoire written by himself in Leipzig dialect and a member of the Leipzig Crystal Palace Singers .

In his solo lectures, he used benevolent, never-hurting comedy to draw Saxon types such as “Spritzenführer Schrietz”, “Fensterputzer Läppchen” or “Möbelpacker Plackholz”, all of whom could be recognized by their “speaking names”. With his cozy "mountain pine humor" he was the attraction in his troupe's program, which consisted of solo lectures, quartet singing, cheerful potpourris and ensemble scenes. In addition to him and his wife Selma, who also took part, Emil Wrann shone as the second tenor and humorist in the ensemble. "Liedermeister" Edgar Eyle accompanied on the piano.

Arthur Preil, who later became known as a record and radio humorist, appeared in his troupe at times. The Meysel singers also took part in the centenary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1913.

Meysel is not related to Friedrich Meysel, the founder of the Szczecin Singers.
