Tete is a province in the west-northwest of Mozambique .

Geography and population

Tete has an area of ​​approximately 100,724 km². 2,764,169 people live in this area. The capital of the Tete Province is the city of Tete . It has 305,722 inhabitants.

Although there are mineral resources such as nickel, iron and copper ores as well as bauxite, coal and gold, Tete is primarily an agricultural province. In the past, there were huge cotton fields in the hilly landscape. But these have been given up. Agriculture is now mostly working hard on subsistence, even if tobacco production has recently increased significantly due to massive efforts (see web link: Cash-cropping in Tete province) and doubled between 2003 and 2006. The province is characterized by Mopane trees and grasslands.

58 of 221 villages reported landmines in 89 fields. The surrounding areas of larger towns are particularly affected, and there, above all, access to the infrastructure such as roads, railways, electricity lines, bridges or airstrips. 76% of the people live from agriculture and fishing, 8% have a state job, 7% work in companies, etc. a. in mines or in the service sector.

The province was briefly an independent postal area during the Portuguese colonial rule . Two series were issued in 1913 and 1914 that were used until 1920. After that, the Mozambique brands were again in use in the province.
